Pick a Card: Robin
(Arkham Asylum)
Eric "Slade Wilson" Schaen
07/27/2009

Welcome to another article of Pick a Card. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Pick a Card; in this article I pick a character and make some feat suggestions that make good sense for the character and increase their usefulness in the game. That being said lets get to it.

This time up we’re going to be looking at Robin from Arkham Asylum. Let’s have a look at the dial shall we.

I have to say at 66 points Mr. Drake is a real bargain! With a full dial of leap climb, Combat reflexes, perplex and the batman team ability, he is going to be hard to deal with. His special powers bring some great options to this character as well, no doubt he’s making good use of that utility belt.

FLASH BANG (3pts)

Prerequisites: Smoke Cloud
Choose a Character. The character can use Smoke Cloud as a free action if it is given a move action immediately before or after using Smoke Cloud. After this feat is used, remove it from the game.

Pounce (15 pts)
Prerequisites: Leap/Climb; damage value 1 or 2
Choose a character. Give this character a power action; it moves up to its speed value and makes a close combat attack as a free action. After resolving this action, this character takes 1 pushing damage that ignores Willpower and team abilities

Heightened Reflexes (10 pts)
Prerequisites: Combat Reflexes or Energy Shield/Deflection
Choose a character. When the character is hit by an attack using Charge, Hypersonic Speed, Running Shot, or the transporter move and attack ability, roll one six-sided die before damage is dealt. On a result of 5 or 6, the character evades the attack.

So let’s give him some feats to play with. The first feat for robin is Flashbang.

For 3 points, Robin now gains some mobility when using his smoke cloud, this can be handy for placing that tear gas grenade in just the right place, slowing down some foe and possibly incapacitating them to boot. You can also perplex his range to squeak out a little extra distance when using this. Just remember it’s a one shot deal as you have to remove the feat after it’s used.

Next I recommend an oldie but goodie pounce.

Ok so maybe you don’t like taking (1) pushing damage, but consider this. With perplex he can up his attack to increase his chance of hitting or his movement value to surprise an enemy who thought they were out of his range. If he hits he will cause (3) damage, that’s enough to hurt even invulnerable foes. That push clix will then put him on his second clix where he gains the batline ability more options are always fun.

Now how about some heightened reflexes.

So basically for 10 points the red bird just gained super senses against an opponent who tries to attack using any sort of mobility. Imagine the look on your opponents face when they charge Robin and miss due to this feat. I can hear the words now, “I wouldn’t have done that if I knew he had that feat.” To which you reply, “I declared it at the start of the game and you could have asked, sorry.”

So for just 28 points you can feat Robin up with this combination or you could simply use the one’s that grab you!

Until next time fellow gamers!

Your Comments:
hmmm, 3 points? theres actually a 5 point Flashbang thats better, the only thing thats different is you halve your movement, but its permanent.

Errol, you have to make an attack roll to use the incapacitate portion. The idea is that Robin fires off some smoke and then makes a groin punch on the bewildered opponent. You still have to make the attack roll.

On Tear Gas Grenade; do you have to roll the dice to make the incapacitate attack or does it happen automatically since it's a free action?

If I have 3 points left I usually go for alias, but after reading this article if I'm playing this Robin I'll put it towards flashbang. I think it would be lots of fun and would be a better use of the points.

Robin and Nightshade is why Smoke Cloud had to be updated to limit one use. I've used pounce and smoke flashbang. I didn't think about heightened reflexes. Would do him serious good as well.

Too bad he can't tear gas someone who is already standing in hindering.

What an awesome figure, even without cards. I would definitely use Heightened Reflexes, because the move and attack strategy is the most common counterattack for stealth figures...still a good offense is the best defense...so Lunge is a close second. :) Cool write up! Still haven't got this figure...no one wants to trade him...

I actually like this guy without cards, but I have to admit that Lunge is the go to feat for me. I would lunge him up.

Posted by: bigdaddyhub on 7/29/2009 11:24:11 AM
I like the combinations. if only he had incap on the dial as a prereq for takedown, then he would be a monster

Posted by: TheBionicLeopard on 7/28/2009 8:48:35 PM
I like heighted reflexs on him, but I'd skip smoke cloud, just because its a one shot deal.

Posted by: transmetalgriffin on 7/28/2009 9:34:59 AM
if you have to add that many points to make him great I would prefer to just have him good :P

Great review. It was really helpful for me since I always use Robin in my teams. :) I really like the heightened reflexes combo. :)

definite points for not going for the obvious choices, but as others have said, you really can't go past Inside Info and Lunge for this figure.

Posted by: Mr_Nobody on 7/28/2009 2:41:27 AM
I prefer the old Flashbang to the new. Yeah, you can get full movement for 3 points, but it's a one shot. For two more points, you give Tim running shot/incap. Tack on a Stunning Blow and... well, I'm sure you can see it for yourself.

I really like Inside Information on Robin. He has so many keywords that it almost always pays off.

Posted by: evereadyhdst on 7/27/2009 4:15:03 PM
I like Lunge and Maneuver, so that you can move attack and move into hindering again(if possible)

Posted by: DOOMBOTSKI on 7/27/2009 4:14:10 PM
I like lunge currently for just about anyone it's legal for. So much cheaper than pounce.

Posted by: beecaveman on 7/27/2009 3:39:52 PM
I'm going to follow the previous comments and agree the heightened reflex is the one to go with as well. I've never used feats that much any more, but I have to look into using that card more often

Posted by: Remjer on 7/27/2009 2:49:54 PM
Heightened Reflexes is definitely the one I'd go with. This version of Robin is already such a pest, that yeah, you usually have to either charge in for the attack, or base him. Basing him is no fun. Especially with Batman around!

Posted by: Shellhead's Pal on 7/27/2009 2:09:47 PM
I never use heightened reflexes because it never seems worth its points to me but I'm realizing now that on a batman ally move and attack is the mostly likely way you'll be attacked. Hmmmm . ..

Posted by: mr-coffin on 7/27/2009 1:49:16 PM
Heightened Reflexes for sure, but I really wouldn't want to put my allotment of feat points on one figure who isn't going to be my primary attacker. He's still great though.

Posted by: srsjuiceman on 7/27/2009 1:39:33 PM
All of these feats are effective additions to Robin, but I would not want to add 28 pts in feats to a 66-pt figure.
