HeroClix World's Take
I see nothing wrong with this (in general). The entire dial was on the HaloClix cards years ago, and that wasn't a problem.
I actually think this is a good thing, in general -- cards have been required for play for many years now, so this changes nothing. As for "seeing" your opponents dial? Who cares. It's not like a it's going to be a huge advantage or disadvantage.
There are 2 "real world" problems with this:
1) Misprints. We already have them. It's going to be real bad if the dial on the card is not the same as the dial on the base. I hope WK increases their QA department to minimize this problem or eliminate it.
2) While I think this is a good thing, I fear this will eventually lead to removing the dial off of the base completely. If you think about it, it would be a huge cost savings if WK can eliminate the HeroClix dial. The dial itself is expensive, not to mention the cost of attaching it to the figure, and the cost of paying the patent fees.
Then again, maybe dumping the HeroClix base isn't a bad thing, particularly if we can get more figures for the same price (or even reducing the price of a booster).
But if the base is removed, can it really be called "Clix" anymore?
02-05-2016: Looks like (2) above was unfounded. Take a look at the official announcement we got today:
EDIT: Official word from Wizkids:
P.S. And just to assure some folks out there that we aren’t hiding some grand scheme… we are not going to get rid of the figure or dial…
And check out the original Halo ActionClix card -- having the dial on the card turned out great:
