FF 112#3 Hulk vs. Thing
(Fantastic Four #112)

Well look who made the list again!

This story is a classic. It’s one of many Hulk vs. Thing throw downs, but this one has a twist. The story is built around one of Reed’s many attempts to cure Ben. Reed actually succeeds, but with a twist.

Ben now has the ability to transform from the Thing to human again at will. The only problem is that when he becomes the Thing, he becomes more and more unreasonable. Reed asks Bruce Banner to assist him in finding a cure, but when the Thing looses it, Banner becomes the Hulk to try and restrain Ben. What makes this one different is that the Thing is the one who loses control, and this allows him to actually get the better of the Hulk for once.

...That is until Alicia makes an appearance distracting Ben and Hulk knocking him out with a cheap shot.

Your Comments:
Marvel civil war should rank as number one easily. even if we're not counting team battles, the final showdown with iron man getting humbled by cap was just awesome.
i also agree with the ultimates cap vs giant man, that may have been the best story arc in the whole series

You missed one. Superman vs. Captain Marvel in Kindom Come. I'll take that over Wolverine / Spiderman any day.

Batman vs. Superman is the best. 'Nuff said...

I agree spider-man vs wolverine is cool but every one knows hulk vs thing is the best

Posted by: morgan smith on 12/30/2011 9:08:49 AM
NO WAY!!!!!! spidey vs wolverine is the best ever.

Posted by: theo on 11/27/2011 1:25:56 PM
Good list...And, to add one (now, Batman Is my fav character!!!) But THE throwdown between Batman and Karate Kid?? Bats throws one punch, then in two panels, KARATE KID kICKS BATMAN'S BUTT!!!! classic...almost, a NON fight...

Posted by: danny on 11/17/2011 12:27:44 PM
Superman vs. Hawk when it was revealed that Hawk was Monarch. The fight contained one of the few truly menacing lines ever uttered by the big S: "Please... don't make me hit you again."

A oldie but still a gud matchup. Hulk vs Wolverine. Of course the Hulk won, but regeneration helped wolverine make it a gud fight.

One of my favorites is from the Ultimates:

Captain America vs. Giant-Man. Cap finds out that Hank Pym put Janet in the hospital and then went AWOL. Cap goes off the grid himself and hunts Pym down as his 1940s sense of civility is offended. The beating he delivers to Pym is awesomely rendered, especially the shot where he climbs the stairs in a bar just so he can jump out the window at the height of Giant-Man's head.

The fight ends with tons of construction materials dropped on the head of the naked loser, and the line "How big do you feel now, dirtbag? How big do you feel now?"

The entire issue was an epic display of dark humor and jackbooted chivalry.

one more to add, from way back in X-Men (during the old Phoenix saga) when the X-Men and Starjammers met. when encountering the guardian of the M'Kran Crystal wolverine figures he can take him easy (smaller runt than himself physically). Next Panel the Star Jammers Ship is reporting Wolverine hitting escape velocity from being hit so hard

Justice Leauge animated series: Superman vs. Captain Marvel... I could go on all day with this...

Posted by: Licensedhero on 11/10/2011 9:02:02 PM
I second Grim's offering, even though there was just that one punch, the pyschological blow-by-blow btw. Wayne & Jordan read as though it had the impact of a body blow to the reader. "So, you're back?"

If multiple participants are allowed, I want to mention the Hulk vs. Iron Man, Wonder Man, Hercules and Namor somewhere around IH number 315 or so. John Byrne story. Excellent.

I like the JLA vs Avengers crossover for one reason. The fight between Thor and Superman. Granted Superman wins but then the rest of the Avengers beat the F*** out of him. It made me laugh seeing Superman getting beat up by other heavy hitters. Well worth the read

another one that should have been included was Spiderman Vs ilk when Hulk was changing at night (going by 'Mr. Fixit at the time IIRC) and Spiderman had the Cosmic Power.
One Punch and Hulk was Literaly in orbit.

I agree with some of the other comments about Thor/Superman fight needing to be here. #1 should have been the Batman punch to Guy's face. That book is still one of my all time favorite comics due to seeing it.

But you must not be old enough to remember the great battle way back in Daredevil #7 (1964)when DD battles Namor. DD fought him tooth and nail, never giving up until Namor stopped what he was doing and realized that He could never win against a hero like DD and then he left.

well maybe it wasnt a total knockout, more of a knock down and Bats did not get up to gace him again, he waited to take him unawares in teh Batcave for a cheap shot, but still qualifies more than most of this list. most are just good fights/scraps. only the Batman/Guy Gardner one was a true Smackdown IMHO. (Qualifier being a humiliating defeat)

Posted by: Grim on 11/8/2011 10:17:53 PM
To be fair, Jordan didn't KO Batman, he only knocked him down... Mad props to the author of this for the number one selection from a barely comic. I haven't read it in years, but I loved the part where Spidey knocks Wolverine up in the air, who comes strait back down, claws first. Spiderman's dodge is classic

Posted by: Licensedhero on 11/8/2011 8:54:11 PM
how can you not include Hal Jordan knocking out Batman with one punch in Green lantern Rebirth? Come on, Bats was acting like the Jerk Guy Gardner usually is and Hals Ring wasnt even Lit when he hit Bats. and all after John Stewart chewing out Batman for the real reason he doesnt like Jordan, Jordan is not afraid of Bats (and if you dont fear him Bat Man is just a man)plus the Looks on Guy's and Kilowog's faces made it even better

Posted by: Grim on 11/8/2011 6:55:34 PM
Superman vs. Thor is absolutely a must if this list got expanded... Also noteworthy would be Hal Jordan vs. Batman in Green Lantern: Rebirth. if only for the look on Guy Gardner's face. Also if this list got expanded, my choice for the best non-big 2 hero vs. hero: Dragon vs. Super Patriot in Thee Savage Dragon (min-series) #2

Anybody with access to it, take a look at Iron Man vs. Sub-Mariner from Tales to Astonish #81...a visually breathtaking battle sequence, courtesy of the master himself, Jack Kirby.
And kudos to the author for including FF #112...I remember reading it back when it first came out, and the impact of the story has always stuck with me.

I know it says Super Hero vs Super Hero but one battle that always sticks out in my head is Avengers vs JLA. Issue 3 when Thor n Superman battle it out and Supes finally knocks out Thor. This gives the Avengers pause before Iron Man, who's always had a hard time wrapping his around Thor's Asgardian roots, throwing the first blow on Supes. The rest of the Avengers heavy hitters commencing a brutal beatdown on the Man of Steel stating, "you don't ever do that to him!" To me, it shows how the Avengers are considered family whereas the JLA are more of friends. Still gives me goosebumps to this day when I think about it.
