Round 1, Fight!
The wait is over! Issue #1 of the Avengers vs. X-men has hit the stands and shops. I’ll be bringing you ringside coverage of this Marvel summer event.
If you are going to produce a story centering on two of comics most popular superhero teams pitted against one another, at least have a compelling cause. Avenger vs. X-men #1 does just that by providing a reasonable motivation for these two teams of heroes to wage war.
The Avengers vs. X-Men event is helmed by a team of top notch industry pro’s including the likes of: Brian Michael Bendis, Matt Fraction, Ed Brubaker, Jonathan Hickman and Jason Aaron. Issue #1 is scribed by Bendis, and does a solid job of setting up the simple yet acceptable inciting incident that brings these two teams into conflict. John Romita Junior supplies the art for the book. I know opinions vary on JR/JR’s artwork, but I have always appreciated his eye for panel composition, and how unlike many other artists, he doesn’t avoid including wonderfully detailed backgrounds for his characters to occupy.
Avengers vs. X-Men Issue #1 is not anything exceedingly new or revolutionary, but it does a respectable enough job of setting up the story while giving readers just enough taste of the action that is sure to ensue over the next several issues. I’m pretty pumped for issue #2, and enthusiastic to see just how this whole thing plays out over the span of the series.
If you are the type to enjoy a superheroes vs. superheroes throw down, but need an equitable reason for their quarreling. Avengers vs. X-Men #1 may be just what the doctor ordered.
