Thor: The Dark World (Movie Review)

Thor Dark World Movie ReviewSadly, it’s the villains that lack any real depth. The motivations of Malekith and his enforcer Kurse feel vague at best. They want to make the universe dark, okay but then what? Their roles are treated as little more than the basic varieties of big boss and brutish underling that we’ve seen again and again. They never have opportunity to captivate the audience, and have little impact on the film. A little more artistry would have gone a long way in developing these characters.

Comedy can be a tricky thing in these films. Some mirthful moments involving the scatterbrained Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård) and aloof Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) succeed at bringing the comic relief. Then again, there are moments that just feel so out-of-place. For example, when Thor takes the subway during the film's climax just so a female patron can press up against him and become all dewy-like (We get it lady, he’s hot). A scene like that may have worked under less dire circumstances, but with all worlds about to end, scenes like this detract from the moments Urgency.

Thor: The Dark World may lack some of the wonder and heart of its predecessor, but it is a far cry from a horrible installment. Even with an overly simplistic plot, The Dark World should succeed at being entertaining enough to keep audience off their iPhone’s.

Well… at least for for most of the Film.

Final Rating: 3 (out of 5 stars)

I guess you skipped that whole middle where Thor, was bested by mere mortals in the hospital, couldn't lift the hammer, oh and sacrificed himself for the town people. Campfire indeed. pft.

Thor:dark world. It made me smile in a good way.
Action, humour, in color, sound, 3D, I-MAX what was there not to like.
Loki & Thor a great double act. Escapism at it's best.

I disagree with the average rating which I would reserve for the first movie. Thor 1 had a beginning and an end but no middle whatsoever. Remember how he was exiled to Midgard to learn humility which he did in one campfire session with Jane? There wasn't even a montage to make it seem like he had experiences.

Cut to the new movie and there was much more going on and it didn't feel so much like chunky transitions between middle acts. I felt this was a much better Star Wars than the recent Star Wars flicks and visually it was a good use of the bigger budget that they had. This movie was good fodder for HeroClix scenarios as well what with the dimension-hopping ideas.

Im 3 comes up because it had more holes than Swiss cheesey.

Thor 2 was better, but still had it's issues. Here is hoping Cap 2 doesn't disappoint.

Awesome movie. as good as the first. It felt balanced for the most part. Not sure why Ironman 3 is coming up, but also awesome.

Thor is one of the few franchises where lack of depth is really a good thing. Malekith didn't need depth, he just needed to be a threat. The movie treated the threat light heartedly because it was absurd. The movie was very self aware even the parts where the science is being explained it is interrupted by something ridiculous. Thor does a very good job of knowing it is only a part of a whole this movie was simply set up for more movie universe building and it does a great job of being that superficially entertaining.

Not quite as good as the first one, but still a good movie overall.

After how bad Ironman 3 was I was worried movie studios lost there grove but Thor dark world showed me they are still going strong. And Cap. America Winter Soldier looks like it wil be good but only time will tell.

I must be easily entertained because I thought this movie was good. I definitely think it was a lot better than the Iron Man 3! And speaking of off putting comedy, Iron Man 3 was loaded with terrible comedy drops. Anyways, I like this movie as much as the first.
