HeroClix World Quintessential Aquaman DialAquaman. One of the most underrated and under-appreciated characters in the DC universe. He talks to fish, right? Wrong. Aquaman can be a one man army when he needs to be -- and today we're going to prove it with the Quintessential Aquman HeroClix dial!

The Quintessential series discusses just one character and presents the "ideal" HeroClix dial for that character.

First and foremost, Aquaman is a 125 point secondary attacker. He's extremely comparable to other HeroClix figures in this point range, but this Aquaman's got a bite (see what I did there?)

This first 2 clicks gives him Charge, Flurry, Close Combat Expert, Super Strength, Invulnerability, and the ability swim in water! Think about that - Aquaman can charge for 5 damage if he finds a heavy object... and once he's in combat he's protected with damage reduction and can still do 5 damage with CCE! Find someone without damage reducers and he can deal 6 damage with a Flurry attack!

Dial By Eric Schaen (Continued below...)

As if that wasn't enough, he's got a lots of powers that makes him extremely deadly in water. Fortunately many maps now come with water, but the Quintessential Aquaman was designed to be very potent on any map (with or without water). Even late in the dial, this Aquaman is not to be trifled with -- Leap/Climb to maneuver and Blades/Claws/Fangs to potentially deal 6 damage with his mighty trident! Oh, did we mention his army of sea animals?

The Quintessential Aquaman is the clix we deserve.

Luv me some Manor.

Aquaman's ability to survive at the bottom of the ocean has been used as a justification to give him a number of above average human traits over time. I think in terms of Heroclix mechanics, these have included:

Super Strength.
Invulnerability.

both of which are included here.

The Super Strength and advanced swimming speed have been combined to give him the "leap 60 feet in the air out of water" ability.

Slade, I'd like you to think about doing a dial for Namor and see how you compare and contrast the characters in terms of HeroClix dials.

@ Bliss

Just so you know, its a common misconception that being able to withstand water pressure has to do with some form of invulnerability or incredibly dense flesh.
It has more to do with how an organisms physiology adapts to the environment: http://discovermagazine.com/2001/aug/featphysics

This is why a whale can dive pretty deep but can also be pierced by sharp objects.

Also, heroclix dials tend to be shorter in length nowadays (sometimes too short). I try to keep my dials in-line with the trend of the game.

Thanks!

I really like this one if anything I'd say maybe make him 8 clix oppose to 7. I mean he can walk around on the bottem of the ocean without an issues so he should be able to take a little more damage.

What? Aquaman standing on the tentacle of a giant squid (DC75 set) wasn't cool enough?

Posted by: superfriend on 8/8/2014 6:59:06 AM
Boooooooooooooooo

Worse Dial Ever.....Hahahahahaha

For us old heads.....where is the Sea Horse, where is the ability to throw water balls under water at his enemies?

Just saying is all...

And I do like this dial. I particularly like the additon of the pogs. It would be nice to see this figure made and maybe give us a whole series of approved play print and play pogs to down load. Then maybe expand on the trait in some way to limit the amount he can bring in. But it would give the player to possibly decide on which sea beasty to bring into a game.

We still need an Aquaman on a Sea Horse....when WK when?

Punching out.....

make the dolphin a transporter

@ SF

Agreed dolphins need some more benefit in the game. Personally, I would like to see something like range is halved when drawing a line of fire to these characters when they occupy water terrain.

Posted by: Slade on 8/7/2014 1:34:25 PM
I'd like to see water terrain give dolphin movement a bonus in terms of being hard to hit.

+1 to defense is what normal hindering terrain does for everyone.
+2 to defense if in water is a trait of a recent Black Manta.

We need something that helps all dolphins, but at the same time does not make that Black Manta insane.

something like this:

Dolphin = ignores blue[] for movement AND if occupies blue[] +1 to defense if defense is not already increased by trait based on occupying water terrain.

Very nice, I hope we get something like this in February!!

The one thing I would like to see added to these is some insight as to how the designer decided to out which powers where on the dial.

Or why he decided to make the "cant't draw line of fire" when in water a special power for 3 clicks when one of the recent Black Mantas has it as a trait.

Iron man next? ;)

Slade/The Le keep these coming, they're great. I truly wish these were legit figures, I'd buy them in a heartbeat. Especially that Hulk!!

Posted by: jwats on 8/6/2014 3:56:56 PM
The Dolphin should have Exploit Weakness or Precision Strike, they have been observed to use their nose as a weapon when they ram things.

Thanks all, glad you appreciate the dials.

@Mantis Warrior: A sticker maker is in the plans, but nothing to show yet. It has to be coded in SVG/HTML 5, which is not something I've ever done. Right now I'd say Robert's Dial maker is the best place to make round stickers.

A dial maker is easy, because everything's displayed in a rectangular-table-format. A sticker maker is much harder because you have to get all the curves and angles just right.

Another great dial. I'm not normally a fan of a 9AV on my favourite figs but this version of Atlantis' favourite son has at least got flurry on most of them to hedge his bets. Love the bystander creation too.

As Blitz, Jwatts and James have said it would be nice to see these dials made...

So The Le, you've obviously gotten yourself a heroclix dial maker. Does your superpower extend to a sticker generator? I for one would love to print off some of these dials to stick onto spare sculpts for 'friendly' matches. Or would this infringe copywright?

Posted by: Mantis Warrior on 8/6/2014 11:45:57 AM
Very nice! I would love to field this Aquaman as part of a Justice League or Atlantis theme team. Now all I gotta do is find a way put you guys in charge of actually making these clix so I can buy them.

Posted by: James on 8/6/2014 10:00:10 AM
Why are these quintessential dial folks NOT designing real dials. Everything they've done so far is FANTASTIC.

Posted by: jwats on 8/6/2014 9:07:29 AM
Also, is there a maximum limit to the number of animals or number of a specific type of animal Aquaman can summon?

Posted by: superfriend on 8/6/2014 8:23:53 AM
Now THIS is a dial I can get behind.

Marine Telepathy. I love the variety and random chance here. Aquaman's action for the turn becomes the action of the summoned marine animal. It will be useless on maps without water, but it also should not work without water. It also does not say PRINTED water terrain, so if you can pack in a character which makes their own water, you should be OK. One question in terms of accuracy. What happens to the marine animal if it ends its turn not in water terrain? Can it do anything if it leaves the water?

In terms of powers, they feel about right. I wonder if we could justify giving him Precision Strike on clicks 3 and 4. I also wonder if he warrants Invincible for his opening click.

Finally, point cost. I like the point cost at 125. The last 2 Aquaman versions we got were 111 (JL52) and 110 (TT) points. I think Aquaman could go 150 points, but I like 125 too. Trying to say I hope the next Aquaman we get is 125 or 150 points for variety from what we've gotten recently.
