Chris Hemsworth and Kenneth BranaghAs I commented earlier, Thor is easily the one Marvel film that could have been screwed up, however the movie works incredibly well. The actors did a great job, the story was both light-hearted and moving, and the effects were, well…epic. At no time watching this movie did I once find myself uninterested or waiting for it to come to a close.

Chris Hemsworth who plays Thor is still a bit of a newcomer to audiences. His last role was a brief part as the father of Captain James T. Kirk in 2009’s Star Trek. That being said, Hemsworth proves that he has the ability to carry a film as the lead character. He truly showed his range in this film, transforming from an arrogant deity to a humbled and true hero. You really couldn’t ask for a better Odin than the always excellent “Sir” Anthony Hopkins. Mr. Hopkins pulls off this role with all the majesty needed to portray a character known as the all-father and king of the gods.

Directed by Kenneth Branagh, the story is exciting and well paced. Branagh’s handling of the film overall is excellent. The story does some jumping back and forth between the realms of Asgard and Earth. However, Branagh pulled this off without making the story feel choppy or disconnected. The realm of Asgard is a sight to behold; it embodies all the grandiose and spectacle that a home to the gods should. The jaw-dropping special effects look authentic and believable. The films combination of action-adventure and humor is consistent and on par with what audiences were exposed to with Marvel studios Iron Man.

Isn't it a bit pointless to review a movie that came out in May at this time? I know the DVD came out today but why not review the contents of the DVD instead of a sad recap of the plot of the movie? We know all that, what we don't know is what and what quality are the extras for this film on DVD.

Give us something new.

I have to disagree with this review for the most part.

Tom Huddleston as Loki was easily the best part of the film, both for the acting and the writing of the character.

The Asgardian intro to the movie was fine (although Thor's CGI fighting looked a bit too fast and silly) and the ending was acceptable.

What they got wrong was the middle. Where was the beef of this Asgardian sandwich? Thor is banished to Midgaard to learn humility, right? Well the film is so abridged that we have to expect that he learns humility over one marshmallowy campfire talk with Jane Foster! This is about as opposite from the Donald Blake punishment as you can get...

The only casting problem I had was Volstagg the Voluminous. They couldn't get somebody to look huge, cute, funny and badass at the same time?

Seriously? You're bringing up the casting of Idris Elba as a negative? I point you towards this article that appeared in December. (http://www.comicsalliance.com/2010/12/16/racists-thor-idris-ebla-racism/) Enough, already! Who cares what colour his skin is? He was awesome!
Yeesh...

Hogun has always been Asian. In the comics he's been portrayed as a Mongolian-like warrior.
