Heimdall and HogunIf I had to pick something to be critical about the film, some of the studio’s casting choices seem as though they were based more on being politically correct than accurate. For instance, the character of the all-seeing Hemidall is played by an African America actor Idris Elba. Now these are gods based on Norse mythology right? As far as any scholar would tell you, the Vikings didn’t practice worshiping people of color. The character of Hogun the grim, one of Asgard’s famous warriors three is played by an Asian actor named Tadanobu Asano.

This may not work based on mythological accuracy, but for the purpose of the film these actors gave fine performances in their respective roles. Their parts are also rather small, so just go with it and enjoy the ride.

The film’s ending provides a feeling of finality for the purpose of its story, while also leaving an opening for a sequel. Of course, we comic fans know that before Thor sees a sequel, the god of thunder will be on the big screen again in next years the Avengers.

Final Analysis
Whether you are a long time fan of Thor, or if you are not familiar with the character, it doesn’t matter. I dragged my beautiful wife to Thor kicking and screaming, and yet she left the film saying; “Wow, that was so much fun!”

3.5 Lightning BoltsYes, Thor puts the hammer down in a big way. This film is incredibly entertaining and does not disappoint. Thor receives 3 and a 1/2 lightning bolts out of 4 from this viewer.

Thor is availble on DVD and Blu Ray now.

Isn't it a bit pointless to review a movie that came out in May at this time? I know the DVD came out today but why not review the contents of the DVD instead of a sad recap of the plot of the movie? We know all that, what we don't know is what and what quality are the extras for this film on DVD.

Give us something new.

I have to disagree with this review for the most part.

Tom Huddleston as Loki was easily the best part of the film, both for the acting and the writing of the character.

The Asgardian intro to the movie was fine (although Thor's CGI fighting looked a bit too fast and silly) and the ending was acceptable.

What they got wrong was the middle. Where was the beef of this Asgardian sandwich? Thor is banished to Midgaard to learn humility, right? Well the film is so abridged that we have to expect that he learns humility over one marshmallowy campfire talk with Jane Foster! This is about as opposite from the Donald Blake punishment as you can get...

The only casting problem I had was Volstagg the Voluminous. They couldn't get somebody to look huge, cute, funny and badass at the same time?

Seriously? You're bringing up the casting of Idris Elba as a negative? I point you towards this article that appeared in December. (http://www.comicsalliance.com/2010/12/16/racists-thor-idris-ebla-racism/) Enough, already! Who cares what colour his skin is? He was awesome!
Yeesh...

Hogun has always been Asian. In the comics he's been portrayed as a Mongolian-like warrior.
