HeroClix World Toychop InterviewIn the Fall of 2010, I interviewed a HeroClix modder that goes by "Toychop". Unfortunately, my main computer flat-lined around the same time. While the data itself was not lost, I was unable to publish Toychop's interview until now. It was worth the wait.

The Le: So how long have you been modding HeroClix figures?

Toychop: I started with the “Infinity Challenge” set, and that was what, 2001, 2002…? So about eight years or five million band-aids ago.

When HeroClix debuted, my group played a handful of games on the standard paper maps and—having built 3-D D&D boards in the past—I tried my hand at creating a modern, urban setting. That homemade HeroClix map scratched an itch I didn’t know I had; superhero modding. There were only a handful of ‘Clix figures available at the time, so I thought adding a custom to the mix would pop the crowd. I’d seen people mod action figures, so why not one of these lil’ HeroClix buggers…? I’d never done it before and the result (a Super Skrull using bits of a Skrull Agent, Pyro and Constrictor) was…well, a first effort. He was messy, but he did the trick: when he entered the game (as a result of a ten-sided countdown die), my gaming group freaked. I’ve been modding HeroClix—and fingers—ever since.

Yo!

Hey guys, thanks for the kind words (and a tip o' the cap to Le for showcasing my stuff here).

I know things have been kinda quiet update-wise on my blog lately, but that's just 'cause I started a new job last year and it eats up a CRAZY amount of my time. I've been working on some new posts and I'll get 'em up there eventually -- some new customs and junk.

But enough about me, let's talk about me...

Kragnorak: My question if he sees this: How are the dials handled? Best fit, or custom?

Hi Kragnorak. First off, your name sounds like a Thor villain. Second, it's custom dials all the way. I'll base the depth of a dial and rough stats of a new custom on a similar figure with an established dial. Like, if I'm making a Death Adder custom, I'll base his dial on the Lizard and tweak it so it feels right. Then I'll head over to the below site and cobble it together:

http://www.urlmaker.com/robert/heroclix/customs_view.cfm

I try and come up with fun box powers, something unique that captures the spirit of the character. In addition to weird box stats, a "last stand" click in their final slot is a must. This "Hail Mary" power makes the figure valuable and worth keeping alive even when they've been hammered. A spike in offense, damage, Outwit, etc.

And that's the poop!

Easily the most fun mods i've ever seen. ClixKart is an inspiration. Now how to do my own twist on that?...!...?...!

Toychop's sense of humor is awesome - I have looked at his terrain stuff before and the captions are great.

My question if he sees this: How are the dials handled? Best fit, or custom?

I've been a fan of ToyChop for quite some time as well. One of my favourites is still the Marvel Go-Kart set. I keep checking in on his site for some new snippet of awesome, but alas it's been quiet these 8 months.

I've been a big fan of ToyChop for years. He has a lot of fun with the game and it comes through in his spectacular mods and maps. Great choice to show off his work.

Does anyone want a quick and easy conversion project. All you need is an Emma Frost figure from the clobbering time set, give it a couple of coats of white acrylic paint with just the hint of blue ink in it, once its dry, cover the figure in a coat of 'Stickles Icicle glitter.' This is a product intended for the card making and scrap booking set. It is a fine glitter suspended in glue. you paint it on and allow the glue to dry. Instant Emma Frost in diamond form!
