The Le: What's the hardest part about modding a HeroClix figure?
Toychop: The hardest part…I’d say it would be choosing some awesome-yet-obscure character to mod, finding the perfect parts to build from, getting the paint job just right, staying up all night sweating the details and the day before you unveil him to your gaming group, spoiler pics from the upcoming HeroClix set reveal that the character you just modded is part of that set. And hey, THEIRS looks better. *WHAM!*, right in the yambag.
As f’r the actual modding process, I’ve always wrestled with getting capes to look right whenever a base body isn’t already sculpted with one. I’ve tried making my own capes with that index card/Krazy Glue trick—using varying paper thickness—but I’ve only ever got that to look halfway decent once with a Ragman mod. I eventually gave that method up and started using already-sculpted capes. That requires a load of extra figure modification: reshaping shoulders and backs, decapitating the figure only to rebuild its neck/head on top of the cape, etc. I think the Watchmen guys were on to something. “NO CAPES!”
I’ve watched some tutorials online featuring “green stuff”—modeling putty—that looks like it would be infinitely easier to use. I’ve been meaning to pick some up and give it a whirl, just haven’t gotten around to it.
