Critical Miss: Sponsored Players
Someone asked us if HeroClix World plans on sponsoring players to enter HeroClix tournaments. Well, that depends. We've looked into sponsoring players for Origin and Gencon in the past, but didn't go through with it.

Sponsoring players for local play is a big no-no in our opinion, because both outcomes are bad. (1) If our sponsored players win a local tournament, then it fosters negativity from the local community because you don't want "big companies" coming in and winning local games. (2) if our sponsored players lose local tournaments, then it makes our brand look bad. It's a lose-lose situation.

Of course, we could always run our own set of tournaments to create our own tournament eco system... but if our sponsored team won our own tournaments, it looks bad on us because it feels like cronyism -- that's not a good situation to be in.

The other question is: who would pay for such a thing? Should we start asking readers to donate money? If so, how would those people feel about us taking that money and dumping it into sponsored players who could cheat them out of tournament prizes? Again, it's not really a good situation and no one wins from this outcome.

HeroClix is a fun game that lets almost anyone be competitive. It fosters competition and friendliness among it's fans, and it's still a very local affair. Even at offical Wizkids World tournaments, anyone can walk in off the street and win to become the big Kahuna. We'd hate to see HeroClix tournaments turn into a place where you need to have sponsors to win.

When I was judging, I had enough grief from players 50 miles away coming in to snipe good prizes from my local players -- if a "sponsored team" did that, I'd be livid.

So, in short, Keep HeroClix Local.

Your Comments:
Why does it foster negativity if they win the local tournaments? These sponsorships are sending them to the big events. Not the ones in Podunk CO. They will be going to Gencon, Origins, DragonCon etc. Just because they are sponsored does not mean they cant come play at the local events in there areas...they wont be getting paid to go to those events. Prize Sniping? Get better, set rules for your events to prevent it. Don't hate because others (who are great at this game) get a little extra to go to these cons. Most of the ones I know off of the list usually sell their Con Exs to pay for the trip.

They have always asked for money. Donating money doesn't mean you control where it goes. You can rightly chose to not give money, but when you do, you accept the fact that the person receiving the money is going to use it as they see fit for the best of their cause (site) all the prizes he gives away, the dinner each year at gencon, the costs associated with keeping the site up etc. I fail to see how someone would need a sponsorship to win the big events. Last year the National Champ borrowed the majority of his pieces for his army. He had friends across the country send him figures, I believe some even overnighted them. I finished 8th and 6th in the Nation before with an army that cost maybe 15 dollars. So that argument is invalid.

I say no. Hcrealms is garbage doing this. The whole ROC crsp is dumb. They have a major ROC board member being sponsered by said group. How is that right at all??

I think you should consider sponsoring me. Think about it:

Pros - I'm retired and have a lot of time on my hands. I am extremely fast, so if I lose one tournament I can get to another tournament very quickly. The odds are that I'll win at least once in a weekend!

Cons - I might need a little bit of extra sponsoship money because I need a LOT of energy bars! I also admit that I tend to doze off while my opponent is thinking. What takes these kids so long?

I'm not quite sure what the purpose of a sponser player would be for. I get having a sponser representing and advertising products but a FREE website?

I'm against anyone being sponsored to play, whether it be by Wizkids or HCRealms, but I do look forward to some of those same players who disagreed with the watch list going 180 degrees now that they're effectively on the inside. Holy Bizarro Williams, Batman!

Lots of good points here. And I agree with all of them.

I completely agree with not having sponsors. They would get a paid trip to the big tournaments and start making a living off playing a game, that the rest of us do on our off time.
