ClixCraves: Superman Custom DialThis week we celebrate the 100th birthday of Joe Shuster, the co-creator of Superman. To celebrate Joe's greatest creation, we present to you the quintessential 300-point Superman dial, created by HeroClix master Eric Schaen.

ClixCraves is a series of articles discussing HeroClix figures we want to see in the future. Our selection criteria can be new never-before-seen figures, or it could be a request for remakes of old figures.

Fun Fact: In the first appearance of Superman (Action Comics #1), Superman can't fly! That's why they always say he can "leap tall buildings in a single bound".

ClixCraves Superman custom dial

The quintessential Superman comes with Charge, Hypersonic Speed, Force Blast, Super Strength, Penetrating/Psychic Blast, Impervious, Invulnerability, Toughness, Close Combat Expert, Defend, Leadership, and more!

@Jpoof YES! You can recreate them in a dial generator. And print them, aduckwhat.com has the only one i know. The site has bugs, but it works I use it all the time. Im actually going to be using alot of these dials as well.

@jpoof, not currently. But you never know what the future holds.

Is there anyway to print your dials so I could use them on customs

Posted by: jpoof on 7/22/2014 10:28:13 PM
Even Simpler:

RDS: Superman can use Impervious. If his Impervious roll is 1 - 4, he uses Invincible instead.

On the "real steel deal", to keep things simpler, I would call it "Super-Impervious." It could just read like this: Superman can use Impervious. When Superman is dealt damage, roll a d6. On a result of 4,5, or 6, the damage is ignored. On a result of 1-3, reduce dealt damage by 2. Just a thought.

Like the dial. Superman should by default at any given time in modern age have the best figure in the game. He's the best superhero ever for Zod's sake.

Now THAT'S a Superman! Would love to see a 300 point dial like this in a set. Supes should be feared. I'm not a Superman fan but this kind of power level feels right for the character. The only dial issue I have is the 'can't use Super strength' part of the SP. If he already had an object would he drop it? Or just not 'use' it in the attack? The rest I love he can zoom in and hit one of your opponents figs but then must clear leaving himself vulnerable, and he can be taken down under those circumstances as SHAFT! has said. You're paying 100 points for those 2 clicks so they need to be awesome!

@Kung Fu Master - sure it does.
Superman rarely starts his fights by picking up a car and smashing someone with it... he saves that for later on when he has gauged that a move like that won't KILL them straight up!
Superman is all about the ask questions first:
*BOOM (bursts through the wall) "I'm Superman, what do you think you're doing?"
*Gets shot, punched, zapped - whatever...
"Hey cut that out!" - NOW he picks up the car...

@warrior woman
I thought that one had to possess the Super Strength power to carry and/or use an object in a close combat attack/action. Perhaps I am wrong. I just can't imagine any kind of Superman dial where he couldn't utilize his strength, since we all identify him with being really strong.(should be a trait) I do really like the dial and wish they would make it. Thanks.

Now I get it. The reason for locking the speed value is to prevent it being perplexed from 12 up to 15.

Posted by: superfriend on 7/14/2014 8:49:38 AM
@ king FI master

Looks like he can charge and pick up an object just fine. The way the power reads, he can use charge normally or not pick up an object and charge up to 11 squares.

Posted by: warrior woman on 7/14/2014 6:04:13 AM
I like the dial, but the "super speed" power doesn't make alot of sense. The whole point of charge, at least with the people I play with, is to potentially grab an object on the way to hit someone with it. Superman can't use Super Strength, really? How about this: Superman can use Charge and Running Shot. If he chooses Charge, he cannot utilize the Carry ability.

@superfriend So everything that's unique about this guy needs to go out the window so that he can play exactly like every Superman ever?

Posted by: George on 7/11/2014 3:46:43 PM
Pro's: Powerful but not broken by any means. Power selections feel right for Superman.

Con's: No traits?? WTH!

Posted by: Green Latreen on 7/11/2014 3:02:15 PM
I guess was coming into this from playing Tiamat from Deadpool last night and found him so overpowered that I never want to field or see him used again. In general, I'd like to see fewer and simpler special powers across the board.

Revised thoughts.

Super Speed: Could this be simplified to "speed value is locked", using the actual speed value?

RSD: Could this be worded as "Superman can use Impervious. If the Impervious roll fails, Superman can use Invincible." PB and EW would then balance this.

EGD: If PB and EW work vs RSD I have no issues with this.

Just going to point out that the damage power only says Superman's other powers cannot be countered, countering the damage power would remove that effect leaving the other powers vulnerable to outwit.

FYI: "ClixCraves: Superman" was specifically designed for this week's 100-year Joe Shuster birthday bash. Not to worry -- we have lots of other ClixCraves in the work -- characters that have never been made. (I'll even take requests if you have them).

Then allow me to retort (in best Sam Jackson voice)

I can't speak for the designer, but I think the speed special power captures Big Blue perfectly from a comic accuracy perspective. Although Superman CAN zip around hitting and running. This is not his normal practice. He typically will Zoom in and confront the threat head on. This power represents that aspect quite well.

The defensive power works for TWO reasons. First, it is only in use at the 300 point level on just 2 clix. Too often a 300 point character is ripped apart by lesser characters due to outwit or another power that ignores their defensive capabilities. Secondly, When he missed his 5-6 roll. Some damage will get through. Hitting him for 4 damage once, takes him off this power (Not a hard thing to accomplish). There in lies the balance.

I always felt the outwit = kryptonite discussion is pretty weak. It's nice to see a 300 point Superman that does not play in a game where every smart character has access to kryptonite.

Kudos for thinking outside the box, Eric.

My initial reaction to this is, "We have a ton of Superman dials to choose from. We've seen 2 alternate universe Supermen since the pink powers have been added in WatX Gladiator and IIM King Hyperion. Do we really need a custom dial? Are there not already enough versions to choose from?

That aside, Lets take this dial apart.

1. Basic powers. I think the ones chosen are all fine. Why no Running Shot? Also, I might move around when they appear on his dial.

3. + Movement. Destroy blocking on movement makes perfect sense.

4. Speed White Power. For simplicity, why not give him modified Hypersonic instead? "Superman can use Hypersonic Speed. When he does, he cannot use the Carry Ability." Or how about a trait like this: "Unwilling to Put Teammate at Risk: When Superman uses an object for an attack, he cannot use the Carry ability."

5. White Defense Power. This would be OK IF and only IF we address part of the White Damage Power.

6. White Damage Power. The "powers cannot be countered" has got to go. Why? Game balance. In the DCU, one way to take down Superman is Batman (Outwit = counter powers). Superman, "Here Batman, use this Kryptonite if you need to stop me."
