Superman Brave and the BoldWelcome to the Slade Files. The Slade files are basically a more comprehensive review of the figure -- the review includes an assessment of the character's strengths and weakness, team construction, and suggestions for playing with or against the character. Like the "Pick a Card" article of old, the Slade files also includes feat suggestions... hope you enjoy.

The 216 point Alter Ego Superman may not be exactly what you want from a Superman figure, but you may be surprised after playing him at how very comic accurate and useful he is. Let’s take a closer look at this figure..

Combat Values

Combat values seem right on to me. His defense and damage values are exactly what Superman should be. His defense drops to a 16 on the last clix, other than that he has 4 clix with 18, and 5 clix with 17. These are some of the best defense clix in the game, not game breaking by any means but very consistent.

His damage value does not drop below a 3 and only sees a 3 on the last 2 clix. Otherwise a nice mix of 4 or 5 damage for the rest of his dial, this is perfect for Superman. Speed values are right on as well. He maxes out at a 12 which keeps him slightly slower than most of the Flash dials we have seen. He keeps double digit speed values for 80% of his dial, and his very last clix is and 8, now that’s faster than a speeding bullet.

Ah, what about his attack values. His attack starts at a 9 then peaks to 10 for a bit, and comes back to a 9. Did you notice that he does not drop below a 9? A 9 might not be an amazing attack value but it is not by any means a bad attack value. This feels like Superman in the way that he scraps in the comics he is not a highly skilled/trained fighter, but his powers allow him to keep up with the best of them.

Superman Brave and the Bold

Power and Abilities

Take a look at his placement of powers, he starts with a clix of Hypersonic Speed and then it leaves for a couple of clix. This is great and comic accurate, he speeds in to the scene of the battle and either hits or blasts with his heat vision. Super strength up front will allow him to hit even harder with an object for 6 to 7 damage, if he so desires. If he takes 1-2 damage, he’s ready to retaliate with a powerful blast of the heat vision. If he takes 3-5 damage he won’t loose the HSS unlike the vet from icons, he will pass by the next 2 clix and most likely land on more HSS and better attack/damage values, now the gloves are off!

To top it all off, He has 8 range and 2 targeting bolts combined with the Superman ally team ability, no stealthy figure on the map is safe from big blue. Superman is also has a solid 10 clix deep dial will keep him long lived on the battlefield.

Theme Team Building

Now his keywords may be lacking with not having any JLA versions to work with but try to make use of the reporter keyword. The rookie or experienced Question are good choices for teaming up with Supes, they bring outwit or perplex to the field. There is also a certain wall crawler from the Marvel universe that could make use of this keyword to team up with the man of tomorrow. Otherwise you could team him up with some of his native citizens of Metropolis even his arch rival Lex Luthor, hey it’s happened a few times.

Keep in mind we have not seen what other figures will have the trinity keyword, I’m guessing it’s a safe bet that the Batman, and Wonder woman in this set are going to have Trinity as well.

Your Comments:
Nothing is good about struggling to hit a 17 DV for 216 points.

That is correct the review was written before the release of the set. These things happen. :)

Yes, Batman and Wonderwoman (and alter egos Clark Kent, Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince) do have the Trinity keyword. How old is this review? Seems like it sat in someone's inbox a couple of months and didn't get corrected before being put online.

I have to agree with Nightwing-fan. Now personnally, I'm a Black Bolt and Batman fan myself, but, in my humble opinion, Supes should ALWAYS have at least a 10 AV or higher. I mean, come on, he is Superman! The mid-dial HSS plus good AV should help him out, though. He's not even close as good as the legendary KC Superman was, but he's not as bad as the Hypertime version. I would give him a 4 out of 5, only because of the late dial HSS.

Well, I haven't had conplete ill luck with this piece. Its not as good as some 'supes out there, but he has his uses. My brother uses 5 clark kents in a 300 pnt game, and it wupes @$$! Perplex up the gazoo leading to 'egoing' in 'supes...its a team that whups on me a lot :)

As far as 216 points goes he isnt bad and all his starting stats are pretty good except for his Attack Value. At a 9 or 10 at its best is a bad joke. Considering that a low defense is now a 17 on average, and that 18/19's is middle of the road. They made it so he has to roll an 9-12 to hit if the character is in hindering. Its just not going to happen all the time. Granted he doesnt have Bats or WW fighting skills up close, but he is Superman. A 10 should be his worst AV on the entire dial. Whoever decided to give him that low of a AV did not know what there doing. At worst he should have gotten an 11 AV to start with.

I prefer the 222 Icons Experienced over this version. It may only be 6 points more but he goes 10/12/18/5 to start with, and a 10 range with running shot.

As far as comic book accuracy goes, hes not. I've been reading Supes on & off since the late 60's when I was a little kid. He use to be able to go against the biggest, baddest villians and hold his own and come out on top. This version maked him out to be a joke.

The only good place for this version is on the sidelines and in my storage box. Unless you have 3 Con Artists to perplex up his attack every turn.

As far as Feats go, this Superman can use the new "Not So Special" feat for his whole dial. A nice bump of the attack value to a 10 for only 3 points against most Modern Age foes. Its probably a better value for the 3 points than Alias.
