02-21-2011: Our friends at ICV2 have uncovered some new facts about HeroClix Online. According to ICV2, HeroClix Online will be a PC-Based game that will launch this Spring or Summer, duplicating the table-top feeling as much as possible. The development is being handled by Icarus Studios LLC, who also made the Fallen Earth MMO.
From ICV2:
WizKids’ Lax Chandra told ICv2 that Magic Online was the model for what WizKids is trying to do with HeroClix Online: “We definitely don’t want to cannibalize sales with the online game. This is meant to be completely non-cannibalistic, as much as we can. Our goal is to bring back players. We want to recapture players who got married or whatever, stopped going to the stores, and stopped playing the game. We want to give them a way to play at home, play against someone online. We’re going to have rewards (in the online game) that drive players into the stores.”
For those who are not familiar, Magic Online acts exactly like the Magic The Gathering Cardgame at your gaming table, and has been around since 2002. There is no monthly or yearly fee, but there is a $9.99 registration fee which also gives you one-free-booster pack (of 300 virtual cards). Online, you "open" the booster pack just as you would in real life.
As for stocking your Magic-Online inventory, you have to "buy" additional virtual booster/starter packs, which are the exact same price as a real pack in your hands (I was able to use my credit card for these purchases). Virtual purchased cards are saved on the master server, so you can login from any machine with the client software (free) and instantly see your cards and saved decks.
It's also easy to trade on Magic-Online. One person I played against felt bad that I had such a horrible deck, so he gave me a few dozen virtual rare cards to boost up my inventory.
Please note: we don't yet know what price Wizkids will be setting!
Anywho, here's hopeing the HeroClix Online software will have all these nice touches too. Will you try HeroClix Online?
