Drax the Destroyer HeroClix Guardians of the Galaxy Starter

Drax here comes with Charge, Sidestep, Flurry, Blades/Claws/Fangs, Super Strength, Impervious, Invincible, Indomitable, Close Combat Expert, Exploit Weakness, and more!

From wikipedia: Arthur Douglas was a human whose family was attacked and killed by the supervillain Thanos. Needing a champion to combat Thanos, the being known as Kronos took Arthur's spirit and placed it in a powerful new body, and Drax the Destroyer was born. Drax's powers included enhanced strength and resilience, flight, and the ability to project energy blasts from his hands. The character often battled Thanos, and on occasion the superheroes Captain Marvel and Adam Warlock. He was also a member of the group known as the Infinity Watch.

Your Comments:
Just played two games with these pieces plus Destiny from the Days of Future Past set last night.

First game was 375 points: Ronan (300) & Gamora (75) vs. Star-Lord, Drax, Groot (100) & Rocket.
Second game was 300 points: Ronan (100), Rocket & Drax vs. Groot (100), Gamora (75), Star-Lord & Destiny:

Results: Drax lasted both games without taking any damage. Surprisingly competent piece.

Thus far, the MVPs of the set seem to be Drax, Gamora, Rocket & Groot. Ronan's insanely good, but pricey and Star-Lord's a very niche supporting piece.

Is it sad that even though I just got these I cannot wait to see more info on the comic GotG set?

Posted by: superfriend on 7/22/2014 8:45:26 AM
After playing against GF versions of these pieces in 2 out of 3 rounds last night, I decided I had to have the sculpts and bought this.

Roughly same price as 6 GFs. No need to go to both LGS and Target (Groot is LGS only, Drax is Target only) to get the main characters. Speaking of the main characters, you get them all and no chance of pulling duplicates, or unwanted characters. Finally, you get the 2104 rules, the 2014 PAC, objects which include ultra light and ultra heavy, terrain markers, a 2 sided map and a pair of dice. A lot more than just six figures.

Apparently 24.95 is the MSRP for these, as I check in another store this weekend. Disappointing.

Posted by: superfriend on 7/14/2014 6:20:15 AM
Wow. I guess I am out of touch. One of the reasons I rejected the AvX series was the MSRP of the starters was 39.95. The cheapest I found one was 34.95.

The last starter I bought was Man of Steel which I know cost me less than 20$. The LGS had these last night, but they were 24.95. I had to pass.

Hoping very much that the LGS gets these in this week so I can start playing Rocket and Groot.

My eyes in the field have told me they have found the gravity feed at the local Targets, buying 4 and pulling 2 of the Target exclusive rares (The Target exclusive pieces are rares 013-016, chase 018).

That is exactly the vibe I am getting from this set as well, grab the starter, skip the GF and wait for the comic set.

As for storing them, thinking of expanding my Avengers Movie storage allocated area to include IM3, Thor2, CAWS and these into one big set. Never did pick up any CAWS, but would like to grab a WS and Falcon.

I honestly like each of these Starter characters better than EVERY one of them available in the gravity feed, including the Rocket Raccoon and Star lord chases. Well maybe not the chases but I'm not hunting them down at the prices they are currently going for on Ebay. Still don't know how I feel about the Rocket Raccoon chase besides the sculpt, which I love. And I'm a huge fan of GotG! Still i think I'm skipping the movie set except for this as i have already preordered a case of the Booster set and the Inhumans Fast Forces

LGS did not get these in. Said the distributor is just odd sometimes.

@You'll never know: Thank you for pointing out the missing GIANT symbol on Groot. I have corrected the image.

Posted by: The Le on 7/4/2014 6:52:57 PM
Groot DOES have the giant symbol. Look at the actual miniature.

Posted by: You'll never know... on 7/4/2014 6:08:13 PM
A very nice starter set, dual start lines for most figures is always welcome.
Here's my two-pence/cents (depending on whether you're celebrating the 4th!) on them as individuals:

Drax: Initially that pulse wave trait looks busted, until you note that he could pretty much deal more damage by just punching someone on pretty much every click. I like the emergency-grenade aspect of the power. Options are a nice thing.

Gamora: I need to sit down and compare her to the two previous Gamora dials so as of now, no comment.

Groot: His 18 with defend will be brilliant but alas no Giant symbol. I suppose his movie version is just smaller but a shame nonetheless. Roll on the comic set (not-a-super-rare-please-not-a-super-rare-please-not-a-super-rare-please!)

Rocket Racoon: Tiny size and a really nice twin shot SP? Yes please. BFF with Groot as it should be!

Ronan: Meh! Not a fan of the character but seems solid enough. Triple start line is brilliant

Starlord: Great 'leadership' without Leadership, which he has too low a point value to use. Well played Wizkids 'cos that is creative! He'll have more use for the Drax/Starlord trait too.

Overall this goes in the must-have pile for me if only because it has all my wants from the movieverse and makes buying the boosters irrelevant.

Oh and Happy Independance Day to my American Buddies!
