Lord of the Rings HeroClix Horde Token Haldir's Archers09-23-2011: The Lord of the Rings HeroClix set is introducing us to a new concept: The HORDE TOKENS.

We haven't gotten the exact rules for how it works yet, but it look's very promising.

Here's what Wizkids had to say...

Want to move a big group of horde tokens across the battlefield quickly? Stack them up, move them across the battlefield together, and then spread them out to surround their prey. Think a token is fragile, a balloon waiting to be popped? You can take down a stack of horde tokens, but you have to do it one token at a time–suddenly tokens have multiple slots! (Even if they are all the same…)

But the best part of horde tokens are horde abilities. Horde abilities are how a group of orcs are scarier than a single orc–special abilities that can scale with the size of the stack, giving extra distance to a Charge, or increasing the damage they do with an attack.

In epic battles, proportional to the battle’s build total, you can actually return some of your defeated horde tokens to the battle, calling up reinforcements! You can’t lean on that ability too hard, because if you only have horde tokens left in the battle, your force is eliminated. (See PAGE 5 For Epic Battles rules)

Let's take a look at Orcs, Riders of Rohan, and the urak Hai...

I think they should make a Balrog figure. That would be so cool to use!

Posted by: Wwmandalorian on 12/8/2012 7:39:46 AM
Ugluk should be UGLY! ha ha haaaaaaaa.

Posted by: morgan smith on 12/31/2011 2:38:42 PM
i got six booster packs, in them was gimli, aragorn, legolis, mr. underhill, boromir, and ugluk.

Posted by: alex on 12/23/2011 2:57:55 PM
Finally got a chance to open my case from LOTR. I was debating if I should just get a brick but last min. it was a case and I am not disappointed. I usually open this w/ my 6 yr. old. but it was too late and I have been sitting on this for a week now.
I was giggling like little kid as I opened them one by one... to make a long story short the pull was fantastic! Just missing #10 and #14 and some rares. I got 1 chase (Mr. Underhil) and 2 rares (Eowyn & Servant of Sauron) and most of the doubles were Ringwraiths and Black Riders. My last pull was Gollum! Got all warriors 3 and all Hobbits. Love this set!Merry Christmas indeed!

Posted by: Ianator on 12/14/2011 12:23:40 AM
The starter pack is one of the heaviest I have seen from previous sets. And the most anticipated to open!

Posted by: Ianator on 12/12/2011 2:03:38 AM
@ Kragnorak... I know, I was wondering the same... Possibly another Country other than USA.

Posted by: Ianator on 12/2/2011 2:25:25 AM
How do people have this already when I am still waiting on a pre-order from Miniatures Market? What is the release date?

Posted by: Kragnorak on 11/30/2011 5:05:38 PM
Do we know of any OP kits for this set?

Posted by: Ianator on 11/11/2011 9:41:34 AM
@MEsch- Thanks for clarifying... And here,I had high hopes for Gandalf, lol!

Posted by: Ianator on 11/10/2011 2:55:42 PM
@ bp29 - Did you pick up LOTR? Is it out already?

Posted by: Ianator on 11/10/2011 2:48:34 PM
just picked up 4 boosters and the fast forces

Posted by: bp29 on 11/2/2011 3:32:46 PM
suprisingly its not bad

Re: Gandalf & weed-smoking... When LOTR came out, during hte counter-culture '60's & psychodelic '70's, many fans of the book thought Tolkien was referencing weed... and Tolkien himself was horrified, and went on the record stating that he meant plain ol' tobacco was in Gandalf's (and Bilbo's) pipe.

Posted by: MEsch on 10/30/2011 6:42:25 PM
I am so excited about this as I love Heroclix and I love LOTR. The set looks awesome, but I question their handling of Boromir. He was the most powerful warrior of the group and yet he is weaker than Legolas, Gimli, and Strider. In the novels it took 20 arrows and a couple dozen orcs to take him down. I would think his dial would at least be a bit deeper!

Posted by: Babawonga on 10/29/2011 11:05:38 PM
@ Kragnorak - I must have been munching on the Popcorn to have missed that line. lol! Awesome! I'll look out for it when I watch the movie again.

Posted by: Ianator on 10/29/2011 1:07:54 AM
@lanator - Am I wrong? Saruman was right when he said that Gandalf would be seeing more clearly if he wasn't red and puffy-eyed from the halflings' leaf.

@Cassidy - I'm expecting a Balrog bigger than the Games Workshop one but less large than that weird hex-game that I never tried.

@Spidey 071 - Yeah, I got into HeroScape briefly but the "real" characters that are coming out now for HeroClix have me hooked.

Posted by: Kragnorak on 10/28/2011 9:11:22 PM
XD at Saruman's epic action. epic action XD

Posted by: Shadius on 10/27/2011 4:48:03 PM
Will there be a HUGE Balrog coming with this set? (Fingers crossed)

Posted by: Cassidy on 10/26/2011 11:23:01 PM
@ Kragnorak said weed!? Lol!

Posted by: Ianator on 10/21/2011 8:22:49 PM
Y'know now that we have LOTR coming clix will start to become like heroscape. Think about the new Haloclix vs LOTR, it's the past vs. the future. It might be fun to see what crazy crossovers we can do. I do apporve of Thor fighting alonside the Fellowship :)

Posted by: Spider-Man 071 on 10/16/2011 9:51:47 AM
This Gandalf dial seems to represent him fighting the balrog, but it has nothing to do with how he usually fought.

Gandalf is a bit of a slacker with a penchant for weed. When surrounded by goblins he is content to climb a tree and hide, casting only light spells. I just don't see him Pulse Waving often or using his telekinesis to transport his companions into danger. He's more of a clever fellow and the "Servant of the Secret Fire" is much better than many of those standard powers.

Posted by: Kragnorak on 10/11/2011 10:07:49 AM
omg gandalf SO BROKEN for his point cost. yeah he might not hit a 4 very much for 155 points... but dam 8 clicks with that, with consistent attack, and only 1 click of 2 damage? TK running shot, 8 range.... so broken for point cost, so much use

Posted by: sparkdemon on 10/6/2011 10:09:51 PM
ill def be buying a fast forces pack =)

Posted by: mario on 10/2/2011 5:05:53 PM
maineboy, they probably call him "guard of the citadel" because this is the fast forces piece. This is probably a same-sculpt variant of another figure called Pippin from the game or gravity feed.

Posted by: thefriendlyfoe on 9/26/2011 11:10:25 PM
I don't understand why they just don't call guard of the citadel Pippin because that is who it is. Does anyone know if they are making a Balrog piece?

Posted by: maineboy2010 on 9/25/2011 8:14:30 PM
@kragnorak. Probably for Keyword / Theme Team cohesion. Or a new mechanic that will be similar.

Posted by: dairoka on 9/23/2011 12:02:20 PM
That's odd... Why does Captain Lurtz with a White Hand on his face to denote he is loyal to Saruman have the "Forces of Sauron" keyword?

Posted by: Kragnorak on 9/23/2011 9:44:58 AM
MY PRECIOUS!

Posted by: Ianator on 9/23/2011 9:40:05 AM

scenario idea from Wikipedia entry of Queen of Fables:

"Unfortunately, countless generations later the Queen was unwillingly released from her prison. The Queen Of Fables is an extremely powerful sorceress and was able to transform Manhattan into an enchanted forest. She can perform virtually any feat and usually has fairy tale creatures such as Dragons, Ogres and Goblins at her command. Once in our world, she managed to unleash various fictional monsters from other stories to use against the Justice League."

So Queen of Fables unleashing Sauron, ringwraiths, cave trolls and orcs against the Justice League in Manhattan should be interesting.

It would be awesome if Mighty Maps were to tackle a theater environment: movie comes to life atmosphere.

Posted by: Kragnorak on 9/9/2011 10:40:18 PM
bobby, that appears to be a large armored cave troll in the bottom left.

This is reminding me: It will be fun to break out the Mage Knight terrain for this set. I can picture these guys traveling to Asgard and vice versa. Cave trolls + Orcs + Frost Giants will make good opponents for Thor :-)

Posted by: Kragnorak on 9/9/2011 2:57:45 PM
...and the rumored 2 chases: 'string' or 'nothing'.

Posted by: Todd Heup on 9/8/2011 8:36:58 PM
What all is that in the starter set? I mostly recognize them, except for the bottom left piece.

Posted by: bobby on 9/8/2011 6:59:58 PM
My 6yr. old and I just finished watching the trilogy when we went on vacation this summer. Golem was frightening for him but he said he liked the movie. I will probably get a case plus the starter set.

Posted by: Ianator on 9/8/2011 6:01:34 PM
@WARMAG: Thank you. I have updated the Incredible Hulk Spoilers section with this new information!

Posted by: The Le on 9/8/2011 5:23:40 PM
Release dates anyone?????

Posted by: Will1161 on 9/8/2011 4:47:03 PM
Check out Dave and Adam's Card World Heroclix section. They have presell images and order information for the Hulk set. It looks like they are going to have a Gravity Feed and Fast Forces set to go along with the Brick and Booster sell. They also give some additional images for set pieces and some information about pieces. There will be a new Fantastic Four in the set. It also looks like General Ross is going to be a click in the set. I'm pumped for the LOR, Superman and Hulk sets.

Posted by: WARMAG on 9/8/2011 4:10:44 PM
I'm curious as to what the Horde token mechanic will do for the game...

I liked the movies, and haven't made up my mind as to whether or not I'll bite for HC LOTR. I'm gunning for DC power ring-slingers, and have been reasonably successful in maintaining that discipline.

Posted by: MEsch on 9/8/2011 1:19:22 PM
So there is 27 figures total. I'm undecided if I really want to get this or not. I loved the movies, but I dont know if I would end up playing any of them against the DC/Marvel pieces. If I did get them they might just be collector pieces and never get played or only brought out when I watch the movies. I guess I really want to start seeing the dials before I decide. Also a lot is going to depend on when they come out and if the money is there to spend on it. My clix priority is completing the Superman set, NOT LotR.

Posted by: Nightwing-fan on 9/8/2011 4:51:31 AM
I think I will stay on the same side of the fence with Heroclixs. The grass is not as green as they say with Lord of the Rings. To me this set does not go with Heroclixs. :)

Posted by: quicksovq on 9/8/2011 3:43:35 AM
Until I see the dials I'm still on the fence for buying these.

Posted by: joe on 9/7/2011 9:08:26 PM
Someone else can have my precious. I have ZERO desire for LotR clix.

Posted by: hair10 on 9/7/2011 5:40:06 PM
2011 rulebook but no release date? Hepl?

Posted by: Kragnorak on 9/7/2011 4:15:21 PM
Boromir just better have an awesome dial. Held off a horde of uruk-hai and looked like a "pin cushion" at the end of it while still breathing. Not three arrows as in the movie. Also, some sort of rule that draws people to desire the ring or turn against the ring-bearer would be sweet.

Posted by: MacDavid on 9/7/2011 4:02:53 PM
Now that we have LOTR and Street Fighter, we can finally have Gandalf fight Balrog...

Yes, you may throw things at me.

Posted by: Jonathan on 8/10/2011 11:32:45 PM
In response to crossover complaints... Don't forget that:

A) Super heroes constantly travel to strange medieval worlds or are invaded through rifts in space/time, especially back in the Golden and Silver ages of comics.

B) OOP Mage Knight boosters are quite cheap if you want to have Gandalf and Aragorn fight against a legion of orcs and goblins led by Dr. Doom.

C) There is an Angstrom Levy figure from the Invincible set. If your imagination fails, you can always trot Angstrom out because his whole ability is bridging gaps between the fictional multiverse. That is how Invincible ended up arguing with both Batman and Spider-Man in the same day.

D) According to Loki, our scientific model of the universe is wrong. Therefore, it might be atmospheric to have the Fellowship help defend Asgard.

Posted by: Kragnorak on 6/8/2011 10:20:24 AM
Makes me want to buy a Lord of the Rings "The One Ring"... I remember seeing this made from Applause that was highly collectible. Wonder if there is one in Amazon or ebay?

Posted by: Ianator on 2/18/2011 8:21:07 PM
same here owlman166 this set will be a must for me since lord of the rings is just great....

Posted by: krisd34 on 2/4/2011 11:19:20 AM
Great, now I'll be tempted to spend more money that I don't have...Peachy...

Posted by: Owlman166 on 2/1/2011 10:12:28 AM
who wants to see some legolas vs green arrow action or some golem vs joker Maybe even some gimli vs bane hellz yes

Posted by: hehe on 1/31/2011 8:33:59 PM
I cant see Sauron teaming up with either darkseid or Galactice trying to take over both "Middle Earth" and the univers at the same time! (I think that I will stay with heroclix)

Posted by: Phil on 1/25/2011 5:03:06 PM
I like the idea, it's nice to have new characters instead of existing characters (how many batmen are there anyway). I admit it would make for weird situations like Frodo alongside Superman (although Gandalf vrs Dr Strange seems appropriate) Next would like to see some Anime characters Like Dragonball or Bleach.

Posted by: KG on 1/24/2011 4:26:43 PM
It would be great to see Anime and Gaming characters... Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, DragonballZ/GT, Transformers just to start...

Posted by: SuperPrime on 1/19/2011 9:18:14 PM
I am pumped!!! Great sign of things to come. This shows that NECA/Wizkids is listening and obtaining more licenses and producing more heroclix compatable universes in the future.

Could we see Masters of the Universe, Star Wars and TMNT? This is a good start.

Posted by: Blake B on 1/18/2011 8:29:41 PM
I love the compatibility. I would probably not buy them if they weren't... but seeing as how they are, WizKids just got a case out of me and at least another one from a friend of mine. Great work!

Posted by: algrim on 1/18/2011 7:38:50 PM
The same that I said on previously in the Star Trek topic...I better save my money for XGS!!! Not excited at all!

Posted by: JasonCR on 1/18/2011 6:57:27 PM
Whether I decide to put LOTR minis in my Marvel/DC clix battles is yet to be decided, but I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE that WK is listening and they've given us the option to do so! I'm psyched!

The other part of this is that it will be much more likely for me to play with these knowing that I won't have to totally learn a brand new set of rules, etc..

Posted by: Preacher13 on 1/18/2011 6:48:23 PM
I love that it's fully compatible. Like some others have said, I wouldn't buy them if they're not. I am not a huge LOTR fan, but it could be fun to mix them in with the superheroes. I understand the purists who think it's an awkward fit, but it's not any stranger than having Sgt. Rock fighting next to the Legion of Super-Heroes, or vampires (from Marvel HC) in the same game as Galactus.

Posted by: Fanofsteel on 1/18/2011 6:24:56 PM
I can see Sam having Indomitable... but not Impervious.
Hm, the aesthetics of LOTR don't really mix with a superhero game. For example, does every character with a sword have B/C/F? That's kind of boring. Something about the Clix mechanic works really well for comics situations, but I would prefer something more like D20 minis for Lord of the Rings (personally).

Posted by: dittobeetle on 1/18/2011 5:00:24 PM
Well if omoud gets "Pac-Man" Heroclix I call dibs on "Dig Dug" HeroClix. While I like the idea of Lord Of The Rings Clix I just don't see Gandalf mixing with say the Avengers or the Teen Titans.
The first match between a hobbit and the Watchmen should be interesting to say none the less.

Posted by: David TG Riches on 1/18/2011 4:32:15 PM
Mmmmmm.... i'll be waiting for the "Pac-Man" Heroclix...

Posted by: omoud on 1/18/2011 4:10:05 PM
Can't say whether or not I'd dump them willy nilly into Heroclix builds, but I approve of the move. Making them fully compatible means it'll be very likely I'll pick them up. (It'll come largely down to the price point.) If they weren't to be compatible I wouldn't give them a second thought.

This could be an excellent, new gateway item to bring people into Heroclix. What affect it will have on venues/tournaments I can't say... and really don't care. Official tournaments generally set restrictions anyway, and venues control matters to suit the local player base.

Me? I'm just in favor of more options. So, good move, Wizkids!

Posted by: Miraclo on 1/18/2011 3:50:24 PM
I am a HUGE fan of the LOTR stories, and will absolutely have them in my shop and collect/play the whole set. But theres NO WAY Ill try to play them in a Marvel/DC game, it just does NOT fit. I would feel better runnig a LOTR team up against a Horrorclix team, IMOHO...tony

Posted by: tonyskingdom on 1/18/2011 2:20:11 PM
I'm not too sure about this. I like that they are making pieces that are compatible with Heroclix (i.e. Street Fighter), but I can't see Frodo lasting long against anyone other than the Dazzler.

Also, the new Star Trek game that we got a preview video of didn't really grab my attention. The guy who was describing it seemed like he wasn't really sure how it played, and I'm just concerned that it will be a property that falls flat to fill in gaps with regular Heroclix pieces, and on its own game mat.

Posted by: CallMeMOTO on 1/18/2011 2:16:45 PM
Frodo will have Mastermind so he can push all damage off to Sam, who will have 9 clix of Impervious.

Posted by: thegrizzlegrak on 1/18/2011 2:15:54 PM
I am a HUGE LOTR fan and would buy these in a minute as long as they are Heroclix compatible. It will be awesome to play some of these alongside or against Heroclix. When does this come out?

Posted by: chrisgo316 on 1/18/2011 2:05:18 PM
"Come on Mister Frodo...Just a bit more. You can make it."
Ahhh dont worry, Gee Tk's Frodo up to the Mouth of Doom. Bullseye sees Gollum using stealth in the rocks, he takes the one ring (Light object) from frodo. Two con artists perplex up Bullesyes damage and attacks Gollum for 6 clix with pyschic blast!

Posted by: Johnwhite on 1/18/2011 1:39:57 PM
Not super-keen on the LotR property moving into HeroClix, but it is a good sign of things to come! TMNT, Spawn, Capcom (which I would hate, but others would like), the skies the limit!

Posted by: Hodak on 1/18/2011 1:39:16 PM
Just had a nerdgasm, gotta go change.

Posted by: Blaiser on 1/18/2011 1:38:50 PM
As a huge LOTR fan, I am excited for this, though I don't particularly need it compatible with regular HeroClix. It could be interesting, we'll have to see how it plays out. Count me in!

Posted by: WolvieFan9 on 1/18/2011 1:36:09 PM
I LOATH the LOTR series except for the Hobbit, but I am excited for this just because it is compatible. I have always wanted hc as a tournament of champions type game.

Posted by: bound on 1/18/2011 1:32:46 PM
I guess I wouldn't mind a crossover game with those characters now and again with the comics versions. I just don't know if LotR is a great fit with old school clix though. I'm for compatability but only for certain things and I just don't see a match here. Just seems LotR should be able to work on it's own steam. I could be wrong though so I'll try to stay open minded.

Posted by: Killersavage on 1/18/2011 1:30:21 PM
Don't care if it's fully compatible or not but sounds like it would be awesome .
