Thor: The Dark World (Movie Review)

Thor Dark World Movie ReviewDirected by Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones), The Dark World is a very different movie from its predecessor. There is much more emphasis on Asgard this time around, accompanied with much more action. The special effects successfully convey the epic landscapes and throw-downs of mythological proportion.

This film takes a darker tone than the first one and the stakes are considerably higher. All of these elements are good; however there are some problems with flat characterizations and occasionally misplaced comedic beats.

Luckily, Thor and Loki’s portrayals are not part of the films issues. Hemsworth seems to feel right at home as the Thunder God. Thor is now battle-hardened and at times even a bit weary; it’s clear that Thor’s attention is divided between his role as heir to the throne of Asgard and his feelings for the mortal Jane Foster. Loki not only steals much of the show, in many ways he saves it.

As Loki, Hiddleston is once again spot on. He may not be the villain of this tale, but when it comes to the God of Mischief his motives are always in question. Loki’s competitive bond with Thor brings more drama to the film (more than all of the Dark Elves combined). You unquestionably feel that these two brothers’ care for and yet despise each other as only rival siblings could.

I guess you skipped that whole middle where Thor, was bested by mere mortals in the hospital, couldn't lift the hammer, oh and sacrificed himself for the town people. Campfire indeed. pft.

Thor:dark world. It made me smile in a good way.
Action, humour, in color, sound, 3D, I-MAX what was there not to like.
Loki & Thor a great double act. Escapism at it's best.

I disagree with the average rating which I would reserve for the first movie. Thor 1 had a beginning and an end but no middle whatsoever. Remember how he was exiled to Midgard to learn humility which he did in one campfire session with Jane? There wasn't even a montage to make it seem like he had experiences.

Cut to the new movie and there was much more going on and it didn't feel so much like chunky transitions between middle acts. I felt this was a much better Star Wars than the recent Star Wars flicks and visually it was a good use of the bigger budget that they had. This movie was good fodder for HeroClix scenarios as well what with the dimension-hopping ideas.

Im 3 comes up because it had more holes than Swiss cheesey.

Thor 2 was better, but still had it's issues. Here is hoping Cap 2 doesn't disappoint.

Awesome movie. as good as the first. It felt balanced for the most part. Not sure why Ironman 3 is coming up, but also awesome.

Thor is one of the few franchises where lack of depth is really a good thing. Malekith didn't need depth, he just needed to be a threat. The movie treated the threat light heartedly because it was absurd. The movie was very self aware even the parts where the science is being explained it is interrupted by something ridiculous. Thor does a very good job of knowing it is only a part of a whole this movie was simply set up for more movie universe building and it does a great job of being that superficially entertaining.

Not quite as good as the first one, but still a good movie overall.

After how bad Ironman 3 was I was worried movie studios lost there grove but Thor dark world showed me they are still going strong. And Cap. America Winter Soldier looks like it wil be good but only time will tell.

I must be easily entertained because I thought this movie was good. I definitely think it was a lot better than the Iron Man 3! And speaking of off putting comedy, Iron Man 3 was loaded with terrible comedy drops. Anyways, I like this movie as much as the first.
