The film’s plot raises concerns regarding personal freedom, technology and the potential dangers of blind faith. To its credit, the movie isn’t overtly preachy, and strays from promoting any left or right philosophies. The subjects at hand are American issues and are treated as such. As for the Winter Soldier, he’s every bit the appropriate menace for Captain America. Comic fans are all too familiar with the character’s backstory (masterfully crafter by Ed Brubaker).
So while the identity of the Winter Soldier may not be a shocker, it’s no less satisfying to see these old soldiers conflict play out on the big screen.
Of the Marvel studios sequels thus far, the Winter Solider may be the most accomplished to date. It’s not only a lot of fun; it demonstrates that blockbusters are still at their best, when they remember to include some substance between all the slow motion and explosions.
I give Captain America: Winter Solder 4 out of 5 stars
