Below is a recap of the MINION RULES, which comes straight from Wizkids. Enjoy!

HeroClix World Hammer of Thor LogoMINION Rules
Several characters in Hammer of Thor have Minion powers, such as that listed below. Minion powers are powers that generally make low-ranking members of a force more powerful if there is a "General" to lead them into battle and inspire them - either by inspiring fear or courage in their followers (minions).

Rock Troll has following:
Minion: We Follow the Strongest -- When a friendly character named Ulik is within 8 squares, Rock Troll can use Charge and modifies its attack value by +1.

To make sure everyone is clear on this new "mechanic" that will be continuing into future HeroClix sets, here are some helpful hints.

The word Minion itself has no special meaning. It's simply a tag to identify a related group of powers that behave in a similar way. It's listed in italics because of this. The specific name of a "Minion" power, if any, is listed in bold following the word Minion. All effects of the Minion power are completely described by the rules text on the card, as with all Special Powers.

In general, Minion powers are simply Special powers that generally behave in this way:

  • They are found most often on "generic" characters and in the common slot
  • They require a friendly character with specific keyword(s) or a specific name (a "General") to be on the map for this ability to be used by the character with the minion ability.
  • They require that the specific character be within 8 squares
  • They are just like other special powers - they may modify a combat value, grant the use of a standard power, or be a completely non-standard power.
  • Minion powers generally are found on all slots of a dial where they appear, and the damage slot is most often used.

There are exceptions to this list, but these are the general guidelines that drives the design of Minion powers.

For characters with a Minion power who begin an action within 8 squares of a specific character required (a "General"), the ability applies to that action. It does not apply if they begin an action farther than 8 squares from a required character. (Note that this rule applies to free actions that are part of larger power actions.)

Example:

Rock Troll is exactly 8 squares away from Ulik. He uses a Power Action to use Charge, with his movement value of 8. He moves 4 squares, and is no longer within 8 squares of Ulik. He does not "stop" charging as soon as he moves outside of 8 squares - he continues to be able to use the charge ability until he begins another action. He then uses a close combat attack as a free action. Because he is now outside of 8 squares when beginning this free action, he does NOT modify his attack value by +1.

Other Notes:

  • Minion powers can be countered as normal, and they are optional as normal.
  • "Within 8 squares" includes "Generals" exactly 8 squares away.
  • The mechanic is designed in such a way that it's possible in the future that other powers could reference all characters that "can use a Minion power", but no such powers exist in Hammer of Thor.

Marvel Heroclix : Hammer of Thor Review

By David Woo

By Odin’s beard, it’s about damn time! Approximately thirteen months after the last Heroclix release, Arkham Asylum, the hotly anticipated Hammer of Thor set is finally released to the world. Is this set, which was originally slated to be released in March, worth the wait? Read on to find out.

I won’t bore you with the details of Wizkids’ demise and subsequent return, much like the mythical (and convention exclusive) phoenix. Those of you that care probably already know and those of you that don’t know can bite me. The point is that Hammer of Thor has finally gotten its release, something that many fans were very skeptical about. Rumors circulated, grassroots campaigns were started, alliances were forged, broken, surprise players entered the game, and when the dust settled, the hammer was held high, triumphant over the nonbelievers, proclaiming that yes, Heroclix had indeed returned! Ahem...and fans were happy and bought them. Oh, yes; they bought them. But new management brought new questions and new concerns. Would NECA, the new owners of Wizkids, meddle with the game? How would the quality of this set compare to the older, Topps-produced sets? Well fear not; Uncle Dave’s gonna cover all of that.

As far as character selection, Hammer of Thor does very well with sticking to the theme of the set, introducing a plethora of Asgardian characters to the game and remaking others that hadn’t been seen in years like Beta Ray Bill and Loki (who somehow managed to get three versions in the set.) A nice touch was making the set’s namesake character, Thor, very easy to obtain by making him a common, with another version (a Thor and Loki duo figure) being reserved as a super-rare. This set also provides more army builder generic figures than recent sets, weighing in with six this time (Asgardian warrior, Valkyrie, Phalanx soldier, Rock troll, Fire demon, and Hand ninja.) This set also features the popular hero t

Better make sure the ink cartridges in my printer are working properly. I'd actually have preferred a mailaway deal for these feats and battlefield conditions only because I don't have a quality printer...

Re: Print to Play Update. Excellent!

Also, welcome back to the official spot, Norm. I'll be interested in seeing how well this works out. (Rulings and the system for delivering them, I mean. Printable Feats, etc. I have no doubts about.)

The site continues to be a good collection point for info. Continued thanks for the work, including attempts to get the official word.

The new cards generally look fun, with some being ones I expect to use almost immediately and others... well, some I'm letting the rules lawyers battle each other to a pulp on HCR before deciding on what the official reach of some of them are. ;)

Direct (reasonable) sale or an announcement that they're openly free to print and use would be fine with me. I've already printed them out, along with the Runaways and Guardians of the Galaxy Feats. Most of my play is with friends anyway, but I'd probably be tempted to use this as a shibboleth for a new venue: If they declare they can't be used, then I'll find another place to play.

While I have my quibbles, in general I'm enjoying what the new Wizkids is doing and am looking into 2010 with interest -- even if Brave and the Bold continues to appear to be a set I'll be saving money on.

Thanks for the Kurse pics (including the original) and the dial.

I was having a very hard time making out the numbers on those Charge and Super Strength clicks, though, until I blew it up. AV's of 11, 10, 10 & 9 and the two Charge clicks of 6 & 6. Yeah, an interesting piece, especially for 121 points.

Definitely like the new Ronan better than the old one. And yes, definitely a candidate for Stunning Blow. Thanks for sharing.

I like the new Ronan's sculpt more than the old one. Stunning Blow?

I think MINION powers are going to be interesting. I'll definitely play some "army" teams to see how well these Minion powers work. Thanks for the update!

Nice presentation! Thanks for dissecting & organizing it and getting us in close. Especially new to me is that one shot of piece #60, Kurse!

I can't wait for this set to be released so I can see that Thor LE dial... very interesting.

The Hand Ninjas are back and as long time HEROCLIX gamer I am happy about it .
I'm also glad that we won't have to do the old " Mail-Away " process for Surtur .

Wow! What a nice power for a 38 point generic! I can't wait to use a whole swarm of these little red death merchants!

Rocket Racoon!! Score! Very cool, The Le! Glad I won't have to rely on pojo for previews. :)

HoT is looking good! Keep those previews coming.

Posted by: rwint1968 on 9/21/2009 7:25:56 PM
Gert & Old Lace are members of the Runaways. I hope we actually get the full team. Wizkids was bad for not including an entire team in 1 set (Except for the FF), i.e. the original Wrecker and the rest of the Crew. Anyway, I CAN'T WAIT FOR HAMMER OF THOR!

Posted by: Bigolegreezy on 9/21/2009 1:13:55 PM
Man, this is exciting! :D
Reserved two cases of HoT last week, and made my first payment toward them last Friday.

The game is on its way back!

Posted by: glen_smith on 9/21/2009 5:43:58 AM
Great images, TheLe! Thanks for posting them. Interesting to note that the point cost of GY and OL on the spoiler list was 57 and they look to be 54 in that picture.
(Also, the Loki was 191 on the spoiler list, and although you can't see the full point cost in that photo, it most certainly doesn't look like it ends with a '1'...)
(And after all of the low-res pix of that Smokey Feet Cap, your crystal clear image really rocked my socks off! WOW! Looking forward to playing that bad boy, for sure...)
Thanks again!
