HeroClix Ultimate Captain AmericaBy my count there's a dozen Captain America figures running around out there, but some of the best are easily the Marvel Ultimates versions. With three from this set to choose from, it's hard to go wrong with any of them, but some are certainly better than others.

Rookie Version

We kick things off with the rookie version, clocking in at 72 points. With 7 clicks of life, he starts with a couple clicks of Charge and a less than stellar speed of [8]. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it would certainly make it a little tougher for him to get into position. Leap/Climb is an interesting choice in the middle, which I have found to be good for one thing only -- running away. The single click of Flurry at the end is good, but only if you can make use of that Outwit.

HeroClix Ultimate Captain America

Unfortunately the low range of 4 isn't going to be much use overall, until the end when you Outwit.

In the defense department it's sort of a hit and miss. The first click has a [16] which isn't great in today's game, but that click also comes with Energy Shield/Deflection, which brings it up to a very nice 18 against ranged attacks. Hide behind an object and you've got an effective 19 defense against range... not too shabby! The next two clicks brings him some much needed Impervious. By this time the defense values have dropped to a lowly [15] and [14] though, so he's going to take some hits, so pray your rolls are good. Even though the next two clicks have the same yo-yo defense, it comes with Combat Reflexes, which is a good thing because you should be deep in close combat for now. On the last two clicks we have a decent [16] defense -- not good early in the dial, but excellent at the end.

What he loses in mobility he makes up for in attack values, which are very good for most of the dial, even when it dips down to [8] on the 5th click of life... not to mention some excellent damage output. The first click of Leadership is cheap on the dial, but the real gem is the rest of the values. Sure it's only [2] for the remaining clicks, but with either Exploit Weakness or Outwit... we'll you're going to be able to whittle down the Hulk in no time.

Final Verdict
A decent secondary close-combat attacker with some Leadership for big teams.

Lord Logan, you're out of your mind if you don't think Ultimates was a great set; Ult. Thor, Hulk, and Iron Man where beasts! However, if you have ever been on the receiving end of an Ult. Thor attack, you have my sympathy. If thats true, all the more reason to go buy Thor as a single (Strikezoneonline) and spin your opponent(s) dials. I have him, and believe me, it's worth seeing the devastated look on their face when you smack them for 5 (Or 6 with ICWO!) damage.

I love ultimates, if it wasnt for ultimates 1 & 2 i never would have gotten in to the mainstream avengers... its just a shame that they followed those great arcs with ultimates 3 which was very sub-par by any comics standard, although the art work was amazing.
living in the UK we got a bit short changed when the ultimates set was released so i only managed to aquire the rookie version and given that i had the avengers ww2 version i decided to repaint him as bucky cap, so now i can only really use the ww2 version, which is fine by me.
although power creep is a real problem for me i dont think this REV set has suffered from it, the rookie version still sees a lot of use from me and he's the worst of the bunch

I must differ with your assessment of Leap/Climb, it is very useful in certain circumstances. For example, if you're playing on a map that has plenty of height, such as buildings or cliffs. It's always great to park a character with L/C next to the building where your opponent will inevitably put the support piece that is doling out Perplex and Outwit. Then, give your L/C character an action and clock that irritating little support piece. They'll never see it coming. ;)

Give the experienced version a shot with the feats 'Not So Special' and 'Loner' - you'll be surprised what extra value you'll get out of 8 more points!

I play E Ult Cap as often as I can. He works great on SHIELD teams. The Vet has an extra click of life, and that 2nd click with Outwit alone with the Ultimates TA is very useful. However, the Vet also has a slight dip in DV that the Exp one does not. Also I am suprised that the Avengers version was not mentioned. The Avenger WWII version of Cap weighs in at 95 points, and it's big addition to the Ultimates is Super Strength (which is a rare power for that team)which goes well with front loaded Charge. It has a limited used SP which lets him make a second attack if he KO's a figure. Comicly accurate if you imagine Cap dropping into a group of nazi mooks and cracking some skulls. While it's AV is pretty solid, the DV on the figure drops quickly and mid-dial 1 damage with CCE limits it's range options. Overall it's Ultimates E Cap ftw by a longshot!!!

How would I play Ult. Cap? I wouldn't. Power creep has taken this guy out just like Ult. Thor.
