15 Things You Don't Know about HeroClix

HeroClix has been around for over 10 years, with it's humble roots as a "spinoff" of Mage Knight. It's gone through 3 different owners (Wizkids itself, Topps, and NECA), but has survived longer than any of its competitors (D&D Minis and Monsterpocalypse).

A lot's happened in the last decade for HeroClix (and Wizkids), so let's take a look at some of them!

HeroClix Adventure Pack1. ADVENTURE PACK

Wizkids used to sell Adventure Packs to go with HeroClix! These packs consisted of maps and 3-D objects, including a Heavy-Object-Dumpster that never gets destroyed, and a light-object-street-light that also gives the target an action token, and a light desk that would give you +1 to your defense. There were 2 packs available: the indoor pack and outdoor pack.

2. PLASTIC MAN MAILBOX

Plastic Man is the only HeroClix figure that started out as an object! The mailbox object was originally found in the HeroClix Outdoor Adventure Pack; this same object was later repainted as a Plastic Man figure!

(Plastic Man, pictured below, was a 2003 convention exclusive)

This is just anecdotal, but Marvel sets seem to sell better than DC sets. People seem to buy more of a Marvel set and, while not benefiting WizKids directly, Marvel sets seem to do better on the secondary market. If that really is the case, it would make sense that WizKids would release more Marvel sets than DC.

Posted by: Analysis on 2/20/2014 11:35:34 AM
There has always been a disparity in the number of Marvel vs DC sets released. It was more balanced right when the carded sets started, but considering the game has gone as long as it has, I think WK is probably doing the right Marvel vs DC ratio. As long as there is DC stuff to buy, I think we DC fans can get by.

Posted by: superfriend on 2/18/2014 6:35:38 AM
I allways wanted to see Buggs bunny and the Tazmainian Devil go up against Iron man and the Hulk with a trait that allows ACME objects to be supplied to the toons.

Posted by: Wohlf on 2/16/2014 3:42:55 PM
16. Wizkids hates DC heroclix.

Bet not many people knew that.

Posted by: HeroclixHater on 2/14/2014 7:22:36 PM
I never liked playing with Feats/BFCs. With BFCs, the ability to nerf a strategy just by playing a piece of cardboard seemed wrong. With Feats it just felt like playtesting failed. The list of Feats that are just broken is too long. Not that WizKids is doing any better with Resource Dials. I think special powers and traits are actually great for the game. Without them I think the game would be gone by now. There are only so many ways you can design a beatstick before they all become the same. Special powers/traits allow WizKids to customize characters. There are still flaws and bad playtesting, but at least they keep the game fresh.

Posted by: Analysis on 2/14/2014 1:56:24 PM
OK, the only thing on this list I did not know was the connection to the Magic TCG.

I do think the game lost something when you needed stuff beyond the pieces to play. Feats and Battle fields and pogs were not bad and let you customize your pieces and force.

While some of the white powers are nice, adding them and traits has made the game more complicated and not always in a good way.

Posted by: superfriend on 2/14/2014 1:29:40 PM
Kun'Lun is no longer a keyword only Lei-Kung has. The AvX Month 3 Hope Summers comes with the Kun'Lun Keyword as well.

Posted by: eimorx on 2/11/2014 7:29:21 PM
If you can make Iron Maiden clix then you have got to release the Toonclix!!!! Captain Caaaavvvveeeeemmmaaaannnnnn!!!!!!!

Posted by: Lovesponge on 2/10/2014 5:24:20 PM
The nod to the Adventure Packs and the Map packs seem a little forced. Each only had two varieties released once at the same time.

And I agree that Heroes was never all that good. There was a lot of build up, but they never knew what to do with it. Good start and middle, but it lacked the ability to end.

Posted by: Analysis on 2/10/2014 5:19:00 PM
I've collected clix since the beginning after being wooed by Mage Knight. I'm not 100% thrilled with the change to digital sculpting. There are some of the wacky older sculpts I've put on new bases, because I never wanna forget the likes of Umar, the first Psylocke, and others. They had a true pewter miniature sculpt to them.

Posted by: Mister Der on 2/10/2014 12:36:26 PM
I knew most of this stuff. It helped that ive been collecting HC since day 1. I kinda liked the heroes tv show, well first season was pretty cool. That heroclix ring was very helpful some of those dials were a pain to turn. I was looking forward to those spawn clix i even remembered hearing about the galactus sized con malembolgia figure. But Mr Mcfarlane just wanted too much. He even wanted an overpowered spawn character. I still have my pirate ships in their punch cards. It was a cool game.

Posted by: pandabomb on 2/10/2014 10:56:19 AM
For the Heroes clix, I think the Writers strike was what had killed it. That was when the show started to go downhill and caused rating to drop.

Posted by: Puuka on 2/10/2014 7:39:33 AM
Regarding the Toon Clix, one thing I didn't see mentioned was the plan to have a 24ct Golden Scoobie that was supposed to have been available to be pulled in boosters.

As for other Bystanders that had TA's, there was also the Security Guard with the Police TA in the token sets too. There was also Jarvis with the Avengers TA for 4 points, which was fine until the Thunderbolts feat came out and allowed a Wildcard team to have any TA for 9 points.

Posted by: Puuka on 2/10/2014 7:38:04 AM
As a newcomer to Clix, I found all of this very interesting... One question though.. What is the significance of being worth 144 points?

Posted by: Radie on 2/9/2014 6:43:01 PM
It should be noted that Alfred, Mary Jane, and Alicia are not the only pogs with Team Abilities. Harvey Bullock from Legacy has the PD Team Ability but he's a bit pricey for 12 points.

Posted by: Dr. Faustin on 2/9/2014 3:46:14 PM
You touched on the 144 point characters, but you didn't mention the "coincidence" that M.O.D.O.K.'s 144 point cost from Mutant Mayhem matches the number of lobes in his over-sized brain.

Posted by: Harpua on 2/9/2014 3:38:34 PM
By the way, I still want some HannaBarbera clix - they should grab some of the more heroic sculpts and release them as a Gravity Feed. I've been wanting Space Ghost for years!

Posted by: Kragnorak on 2/9/2014 8:53:23 AM
RE: Heroes, Alphas, etc. I wouldn't mind if they came out with clix of those characters, but I'm afraid they'd be too powerful. They should be about as effective as 40 point Armor Wars figures. I hate that in the Kick-Ass 2 clix, we have characters with no powers or skills represented by 75-point clix.

RE: Avengers dials. When they did that 5th-year anniversary Coming of Galactus event, I participated in those tournaments. NOTHING in the history of the game was as frustrating as trying to use those dials in a timed setting! All you heard was cursing coming from around the tables. Factor in that we were buying blind boosters and inevitably some of the dials were even more stuck than others.

Posted by: Kragnorak on 2/9/2014 8:51:41 AM
I wouldn't say we didn't know. I'd say We forgot. I do have a bunch of the sports clix that I put on henchman dials. Now if only they could make a sportsmaster

Posted by: Taskmatster on 2/9/2014 7:07:50 AM
Hmmm, no mention of HorrorClix at all. Shame.

Posted by: Benjamin A on 2/9/2014 6:10:55 AM
I have been with clix from the beginning. I fact even farther back, in 1986 TSR the Dungeons and Dragon were making made a Marvel role playing game that came with dice, maps and 3D cut out stand ups of the Marvel characters and tons of rules. I would not put money on it but i believe they may have had a heavy influence on the game I know and enjoy. Saddest day was when Topps ended clix, would lead to the next happiest when NECA brought it back. I have had so much fun clixing with my two sons and later son-in-laws and i'm now enjoying my grand kids showing interest in papas favorite hobby.
