Critical Hit: Competition
There's almost nothing out there to compete with Star Trek Tactics when it comes to "miniatures space combat". You'd think that there'd be tons out there, but there really isn't... at least not in this space/time continuum.
Sure we've got Starfleet Battles (a personal favorite of mine), but that game's been languishing for years without picking up new players. (not to mention, a game where 1 turn equals 32 impulses is a pain to play).
Star Wars Miniatures: Starship Battles? It was an interesting attempt, but a $22-per-booster price tag and lackluster rules sent it to the grave. Seriously, it wasn't a good game.
Even when you expand the field to all miniatures, there still isn't much competition out there. Monsterpocaly has fallen to new lows, Dungeons and Dragons minis got canned, and Warhammer is... well, Warhammer's great if you have $2,000.00 for an initial investment.
Make no mistake, Wizkids might just have the entire field to itself with Star Trek Tactics.
Conclusion
Well, there you go. All in all I think Star Trek Tactics has much more going for it than against. It's definitely a risk on Wizkids part, but not a huge one -- Wizkid's has got a dynamite franchise on their hands and they're utilizing it correctly. I have high hopes for Star Trek Tactics and I plan on giving it my full attention when it comes out. Will it be a success? Hard to say this early, but if it is successful, then Wizkids will have made the right decision with this new enterprise and won't be so reliant on just superheroes (see what I did there?).
