Wonder Woman is a fascinating character, but portraying her right can be a tightrope. On the one hand, you want her to be empowered, but you don’t want her to be a “war-freak”. At the same time, Wonder Woman should look at the world with a sense of amazement as to how far it has come compared to what she learned on Paradise Island, but not to the point that she’s an idiot. Johns does a pretty good job, but not without its flaws. The soldiers picking themselves up from the floor would have been a good enough indication that she could not be stopped by mere mortals, but the hole in the wall is a bit much. Wondy would have used the door on her way out. She’s not a barbarian, so she shouldn’t be written as such.
Trevor is markedly younger than most portrayals. The problem lies with giving him a rank of colonel. Even as a lieutenant colonel or a major, Steve is drawn a bit too young for that rank. Yes, it’s nitpicking in a world where men fly, run faster than light, have magic rings, and punch planets. Still, suspension of disbelief comes when the fantastic and how things work “in the real world” believably mix. Giving him the rank of Captain or aging him a bit to his 40’s and not his early 30’s would have been more effective.
Moving on, Wonder Woman finally locates the “Harpy” who turns out to be one of the Parademons and is in the process of opening another Boom Tube and summon hordes of his ilk (as seen last issue). With a smile full of cheer, Diana raises her sword and you know the fight is on! This is another slight change of personality from the Wonder Woman we have been used to. Wondy is a master of combat and warfare but rarely takes any pleasure from testing her mettle unless it is a sparring session, whether with her sister Amazons or a friend/worthy challeng like Superman, Batman, and the like. This version of Wonder Woman appears to revel in the idea of battle for battle’s sake. Not very original, and borrows on the “Xena”-trope, but it is an interesting change of pace. I’m on the fence of whether this is a good thing or not, but we’ll wait and see how it plays out.
