Issue #7 features plenty of what I like to call “Morrison moments.” These story moments are often unusual, but work in a way that only he can weave. His summation of what the Collector is known by the different civilizations it has visited is just classic Morrison. This issue also explains how Superman obtains his Kryptonian costume he can be seen wearing in the pages of the “Justice League” and “Superman” titles.
One thing I am having a little problem with is Superman’s power levels seem to be increasing at an alarming rate. I mean, the first few issues we are treated to a Superman that can not yet fly and gets bruised & battered after taking on a couple of tanks. Now, he is breaking Earth's orbit and standing up to an alien intelligence that has laid waste to entire worlds. I’m hoping there will be some explanation as to why his powers are increasing so rapidly.
Rags Morales art has been a little mixed throughout this run. However, with issue #7 it looks like he is back on track. In fact, his art hasn't looked this good since the work he did on the acclaimed “Identity Crisis” limited series. There is also a back up story that is beautifully illustrated by Brad Walker. It Features Steel attempting to pick up the slack in Superman’s absence helping the people of Metropolis deal with the aftershock of the Collector’s attack. I could have done without the back up story, but the art alone does make it worth a look.
Action comics issue #7 is a good read and gets the story back on track, I have to admit I’m looking forward to seeing how it turns out when Superman and the Collector finally face off. Overall I’ll give this issue a solid B rating.
Final Grade: B
