Now that I've aired my grievances, I’ll tell you what the film has going for it. In a time where summer blockbusters tend to favor heavy handed spectacle over story and substance, it’s nice to see a big summer flick take the road less traveled. The Wolverine takes its time developing its characters and doesn’t rely on special effects to entertain. Once again Hugh Jackman delivers with his portrayal of Wolverine.
Unlike some of the other X-films where Wolverine spends most of his time growling and scowling, the Wolverine allows Jackman a much emotional and philosophical journey for the character.
Even with the climax veering from the well-structured first half, The Wolverine is still an enjoyable movie overall. Oh, there was one other nugget that brought a smile back to my face; the mid-credits scene. You’ll definitely want to stick around for that for sure. (See spoiler below)
FINAL RATING: Three out of five stars.
**Mid credit spoiler below**
2 years later: Logan enters an airport terminal (setting off metal detectors of course), suddenly the terminal and other objects begin to shake about. Wolverine turns to see Magneto (Ian McKellen) who delivers a warning of something dark coming. He turns again and finds Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) before him. Logan asks “How?” Xavier answers, “I told you, you’re not the only one with gifts.”
This of course this sets up for the next X-Men installment: Days of Future Past.
Get Excited!
