You don’t have to be that guy.
Similarly to all the controversy regarding WOS Nightcrawler (or other questionable characters) you can choose to play Spiral without taking advantage of her brokenness. For instance, if your opponent is running a team that is clearly designed for fun, you could consider not using the portal power to its fullest. On the other hand, if your opponent is playing a cheesy team of their own, then by all means, give them what for.
House Rules for Spiral.
When playing outside the tourney scene, house rules can be a great way to make a character still playable, but no longer cheesy. In the case of Spiral, here are some suggestions:
Line of fire: Limit the use of her portal power by making her need to draw a line of fire to the square she places her Gateway marker.
Limit her range: With all the decreased ranges applied to characters and powers, limiting Spiral to eight or ten spaces seems completely fair.
No action after porting: Remember when characters used to be able to take actions after being carried? This rule was changed due to its obvious effect on the game. Why not apply the same rule to Spiral’s portal power?
Ultimately, there will always be different types of players. Some will favor cut-throat tactics, while others simply desire a fair and balanced match. Personally, I hope that the powers-that-be stop producing characters and elements that serve to create more imbalance in the game. What can I say? I fall into that camp of player that prefers a fun match with the outcome in doubt till the end, to an uphill battle (for either player) from the very start.
