Chris Pratt establishes his leading man prowess and does a marvelous job (yes, pun intended) as the team’s semi-clueless yet charming leader, Star-Lord. As Gamora, Zoe Saldana is fierce yet vulnerable. New comer Dave Bautista does justice to the role of Drax. Then there are the more comical characters -- Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Voiced by Vin Diesel). As Rocket, Cooper delivers a superb voice performance, stealing the show in almost all of his scenes. While Diesel’s vernacular is a bit more limited in the role of Groot, the wonderful facial expressions and voice inflictions of this character carry a full range of emotion.

It’s hard to believe this is Director James Gunn’s first handling of such a lofty project. To put it bluntly, he owns it. The action sequences have the polish of a veteran director (and there are plenty of original moments at hand), while his softer scenes convey the emotion needed to make audiences care about these characters. An additional element that enhances the enjoyment is the soundtrack -- it's wonderful. It’s a breath of fresh air to hear classic tunes taken from decades when "music was music" in a summer movie. The sequence featuring Star-Lord bopping away to “Come Get your Love” by Redbone, as he traverses alien terrain is worth the ticket price alone.
