Karl "Hair10" Markovich was one of the earliest HeroClix rules arbiter for Wizkids for many years. He's since left the world of arbiting, but his legacy still stands. We sit down with Karl to get his thoughts on HeroClix, and more.
The Le: What do you think of the current Common/Uncommon/Rare/Super Rare system?
Hair10: I truly hate it. While the extra sculpts are nice, they have had a cost associated with them and that cost has become apparent. I don't want more sculpts of lesser quality. I'd rather have better quality on fewer sculpts.
I also dislike the number of worthless figs I'm left with. I literally haven't been able to GIVE away a lot of the commons and uncommons I have. The collector in me also enjoyed buying a case and getting a complete set. I'm not big on the whole "collectible" aspect of the game. People should be able to get the characters they love without paying through the nose on the secondary market.
When event event dials were introduced, feats became rarer than rares (and in M&M, rarer than SRs). That's just wrong. And generic characters in SR spots??!? Wrong again!
With 60 different figs we don't get versions of figs that really deserve a full REV progression. Instead we get 'mash ups' (like Nightwing), assuming other versions of the character are even represented on the fig in some way. As a 'theme' player, that makes it harder on me to build a properly themed team. CURSR has really hurt the "comic accurate" player IMO. In short there really isn't one redeeming quality of the current distribution model. WK was really starting to do some good things with the REV model when a certain "brand manager" decided to come in and gut it all. REV wasn't perfect, but it was better than what we have now. I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but that's how I see it.
The Le: Didn't the REV system also leave us with a lot of worthless figures?
Hair10: Somewhat, yes. But I think some other factors may have mitigated the severity some. For example, if I'm creating a Suicide Squad team and I want to include Enchantress, then I can choose to use the rookie or exp. If I'm building a Shadowpact team, then I use the Vet. Under the CUR system I would have one Enchantress that (maybe) would have both of those keywords. So I actually need to have more than one figure under REV. They also have different team abilities, which gives me more choices when team building. Finally, with the REVs all three versions could have wholely different power sets (such as the SHIELD Snipers from Sinister) that makes it more like 3 separate figures rather than a single one (more bang for the buck!).
These factors together made the duplicates less of a 'hardship' on players. Lots of times you could find at least one version gave you what you needed (TA, keyword, power set) rather than having one fig that tried to fit the jack-of-all-trade mold. Right now, after I pull the first Beast, which has the X-men TA, any more I get are just chaff. I don't need to keep looking for that Exp Beast that has the Avengers TA (wishful thinking on my part, I know).
