The action scenes are spectacular. Again the use of CGI in this film is so incredibly produced that there is almost no trace of it. The combination of old-fashioned stunt work combined with well choreographed fight scenes and earthshaking explosions are well played throughout the film. Captain America is accurately portrayed as the fighting man comic fans know and love as he battles Hydra and his ultimate adversary, the Red Skull.
The choice of Joe Johnston as the film’s director is perfect. Johnston has already demonstrated the ability to recreate the look and style of historical periods with such films as the Rocketeer and the Wolfman. His use of locations and set design really help you embrace the feel of America during the 1940’s. Johnston’s cinematography is beautiful, and the balance of action and storytelling is well paced. The score by Alan Silvestri brings just the right amount of melodrama and lightheartedness to the films background.
The films ending is exactly what it should be and sets up for the next Marvel studios film the Avengers. This of course will unite the characters from the other recent Marvel films. You should also stick around for the after credits sneak peak to get a first look at the Avengers, it will definitely get you psyched with anticipation.
Final Thoughts
Whether you are a fan of the Marvel studio movies or just a fan of movies in general, Captain America delivers. Sure there are some minor story changes and plot holes, but nothing so abominable that it detracts from the sheer fun and excitement of the film. Captain America gets 3 star studded shields out of 4.
