There's been a lot of questions as to whether the New 52 is a "reboot" or a just a new window dressing for the additional universe. Fortunately, it's clear that the universe is pretty much the same, keeping your older stories relevant. In just one comic book panel, Bruce Wayne identifies Dick Greyson is Nightwing, Tim Drake is Red Robin, and Damian Wayne is the current Robin -- all thanks to his trusty Bat-Computer. This actually bring us to another low point in this issue: Bat-computer-contact-lenses.
Yes, that's right, Batman is now wearing contact lenses that gives him direct access to his Batcave computers. This is easily the laziest piece of storytelling I've ever seen. I understand that it would be less than genuine for Batman to go old school while the rest of the world is using their Droids and iPhones, but contact lenses that access mainframes? Really? Exactly when did Batman become James Bond? This one plot device has now turned Batman from a master detective to just a guy who knows how to use google faster than we can. That's stupid.
The middle of the book brings the entire story to a standstill, thanks to Bruce Wayne schmoozing with rich people for money... for a entire 6-pages. I'm aware that Batman and Bruce Wayne are the same person, and I'm also aware that a comic book like this needs to spend time on both persona, but do I really care that Vicki Vale is dating Lincoln March or that Bruce has already raised millions of dollars for his pet project?
Fortunately the six-page-scene ends when Bruce overhears a conversation by Commissioner Gordon. Wait, did I say overhear? My bad. What really happened is that Bruce used his James-Bond-Contact-Lenses to read Gordon's lips from across the room while Gordon was on the phone. You know what? Tom Cruise did the exact same thing in Mission Impossible 3... without contact leses.
Yeah, lazy storytelling.
