Saturday morning cartoons have been the staple of kids programming for four decades. What kid hasn't woken up Saturday morning and zoned out in front of the tv for a few hours? Whether it was The Amazing Spider-Man, Flash Gordon, Captain N: The Game Master, or Thundarr the Barbarian, the fact is that Saturday Morning cartoons have a special place in many of our hearts.
Unfortunately the fun didn't last -- the Saturday morning cartoons slowly lost it's flavor in the United States for a variety of reasons, not all of which were bad. Here's some of the causes:
•First run cartoons in daily syndication (Thundercats, Transformers, etc)
•Home Video sales increased
•Rise of Cable (nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, etc)
•Home game consoles sucking up more time
•Saved By the Bell and Power Rangers (seriously though, Saved by the Bell was extremely popular, which caused more live action shows to replace traditional cartoons. You win this time, Zack Morris.)
The good news is that Saturday Morning cartoons haven't been completely eliminated. We certainly don't see it on the big 3 networks anymore (NBC, ABC, CBS), but the secondary networks have stepped up to carry the torch. Thanks to Fox and the CW, we still have Saturday morning TMNT, Yu Gi Oh, or whatever else is hot at the time. Just be thankful the Ewoks cartoon hasn't made a comeback.
Have you ever wondered what a WATCHMEN cartoon would be like on Saturday mornings? Well your wish has now been fulfilled, thanks to Happy Harry Toons...
