"What I Did On My Summer Vacation"
"There and Back Again. And What Happened After."
"Where I've Been, What I've Been Up To"
by Seth Johnson
I left WizKids back in 2008, two years ago. What have I been up to since? I wish I had exciting stories to tell you of digging up buried treasure, or racing an arch-rival around the world, or that I had seized control of a ninja clan who now did my bidding. The truth is that I've spent most of the last two years at my desk. But not without having (and hopefully creating) a lot of fun!
Right after leaving WizKids, I was recruited by Jordan Weisman and Mike Mulvihill (two names any Clix fan should know) to come join Jordan's new company, Smith & Tinker, and help design a new kind of collectable game for kids. I spent the next year as part of the team creating Nanovor, which combined an online game, a special handheld device, cartoons, books, toys, and more into cool combined game and story about a group of high schoolers who discover nanoscopic silicon life living inside electronics--and teach them to battle.
It was an incredibly ambitious and incredibly fun project that gave me a chance to tackle all sorts of fun stuff. I not only got to do some of the same game and creature design I did at WizKids, I also got to design some single-player electronic adventures in the Nanovor solo battle cartridges for our Nanoscope.
We also did an online Nanovor animated series, and after being called on to design all the battles that played out in those episodes I got the chance to write. It was a blast to see words I wrote voiced by great actors then fully brought to life in animated form. (see below)
