The Le: I see that you made the World's Finest sculpt. Did you do both Batman and Superman for that dial?
James: Yes I did both sculpts for World's Finest.Personally I'm more of a Batman fan so I had more fun sculpting the Batman. We were going for the Ed Mcguinness style of art on the Superman so I was a little unhappy with the way his proportions turned out. I'm not sure how well it translated in to miniature. Most of the time if you really like a character it shows in the quality of your work, it's not a consious thing, you just do a better job if you really like and know the subject. Sometimes it was really hard for me when I got assigned a character I had no idea of who or what it was about (usually a DC character) and it would often turn out not as good as some of my other work. It's not that you don't try your best it's just when your doing a character you love it really show's.
The Le: I've always got a place in my heart for Batman the Cult and Walt Simsonson run of X-factor. Do you have any favorite storylines?
James: Yes, quite a few. One of my favorites was the classic Chris Claremont run on X-Men. Those stories were some of the best ever written for the X-men and Marvel is still rehashing them in thier current stuff. I watch the cartoons and movies with my kids and they are the same story lines that they wrote so many years ago just re-introduced. I loved The Dark Night and the Watchmen. As for newer stuff I quite liked the Walking Dead and I'm reading Civil War right now and that is pretty good although I'm told the ending sucks, I was pretty pissed when they killed Cap.
The Le: Do you have a "dream list" of figures you'd like to make in the future?
James: Well, uh yeah, and it's pretty long. Over the many years I worked for Wizkids I only had the chance to do a few that I really loved. I still want to do a classic Wolverine in either the yellow and blue or brown costume, I got to do the ultimate version but I wasn't happy with it and I really hated that costume but it was my only chance. I did the Galactus one but that doesn't count :). Colossus is at the top, along with the Punisher. The Ninja Turtles would be cool as well. I never got to do an actual Ironman either besides the variant armour's so that would be cool. Cable, Deadpool, Shatterstar, Domino and Strong Guy.Psylocke, Rogue, Nightcrawler, Cyclops, Angel, bishop...... I always thought multiple man was cool too. On the DC side a real Lobo in the biker gear, Wonderwoman, John Stewart and Guy Garner.I would absolutely love to sculpt the Watchmen, particularily the Comedian and Rorshach, they would be at the top for DC.
