In regard to the OP kits having ‘less’ content than before, we have to look at the times we are in. How many other games (outside of the giants like Magic and Pokemon) even offer prize support anymore? While the rationale is getting a bit stale, Heroclixs has only been brought back from purgatory within the last 12 months. WizKids is still experimenting and innovating its packaging and prize schemes. Remember, we didn’t even get 3-D objects as prizes until Hammer of Thor!
Yes, TB&TB offered ‘more’ product in the OP kit, but, and let’s be honest here, did anyone really need 5 unplayable Bruce Wayne LEs or the ATAs that became void shortly after release? Did we really ‘get’ something extra with either of those? The only real gripe is the shorting of the maps in the set. Extra maps bring in new players, period. Printing costs for maps are negligible in the quantities that WizKids prints them in, especially if they are printed in China (which is highly likely). This is a short-sighted move on WizKids part and I’m sure will be corrected for DC75.
Throughout all of these changes, WizKids, despite being pilloried on various forum sites by lurking trolls, has made a sincere and honest effort to listen to the base fans. They have made course corrections and are experimenting with new ideas (like no chase figures) to see what will keep bringing people back to purchase more product. Meanwhile, they have adopted an aggressive production schedule to bring us a plethora of new clixs by the year end with even more to come.
WizKids has to walk a delicate balance of pleasing its loyal base while attempting to reduce the costs of entry into the hobby (that includes giving people a place to play) for newcomers. The success of the game depends on both sides being served. WizKids is betting that the die-hard gamers will be willing to wait for two weeks in order to keep a few more stores open and add a few more new players to the game.
Of course, your free to disagree and talk about the injustice of the situation but in the end its all about business. If the hiatus didn’t make you stop playing Heroclixs, will a 2 week delay in getting deeply discounted product or a slightly smaller OP really make you quit playing the game?
Wizkids is making some bold and difficult choices. Try to give them some space to see what is going to work.
