This issue itself seems to be a building block for something much bigger, which surely is the intent of all these new number 1 issues. Readers get to see Batman being chased by the police, an obvious set-up by the Joker, and a slight introduction to a brand new character named, “Dollmaker.” Well, at least his hands and silhouette appear in this book. Round that all out with a cliffhanger ending that will have even the most seasoned Batman readers guessing what is coming next.
Although this is a good story, there are some confusing things about it. Most importantly, when does this story take place? Commissioner Gordon appears to be younger, there is no sign of Robin, and the Joker’s kill count at the beginning of the issue is relatively low. A simple caption box that read “X Years Ago” would have helped tremendously, especially for new readers trying to navigate this brand new DC Universe.
They put one in Justice League #1, why not Detective?
In closing, just about any Batman fan will enjoy Detective Comics #1! The story is fast-paced and keeps the reader wanting more. The artwork is really executed well and feels like the Batman of old. Speaking of the Batman of old, fan boys relax, the only noticeable change to the Dark Knight is a couple of extra lines drawn on his costume. He’s still the same brooding vigilante taking the law into his own hands.
Everything’s going to be okay!
