On the downside, the next scene of the story felt a little rushed. There is a scene where Superman saves a child from an oncoming vehicle. Then, the moment quickly transforms as a mob starts attacking him. Clark returns home and is beginning to question his heroic activities as Superman. This whole sequence took place over a single page. Had this moment not been so rushed, I think it would have had a more dramatic impact on the story.
In the closing sequence we find Clark, Lois and Jimmy all following up on a story about how robotic factory automation is responsible for severe job losses in Metropolis. Suddenly, the factory automations come to life and attack. And wouldn’t you know it; the automations announce the destruction of all life on the planet being imminent.
Meanwhile, Sergeant John Corben is taking part in an experimental military program designed to defend the US from an alien invasion. Once Corben is fitted into a high-tech combat exo-skeleton, he seemingly loses his consciousness and becomes a host for this collective intelligence. The collective then makes its intentions clear – it wants to destroy Superman.
Action Comics #3 is descent read. At times some of the story and art does feel a bit rushed. However, the overall the story is enjoyable and is clearly building momentum for the next issue.
I’m giving this issue a B-. It may fall a little short compared to the first two issues, but by no means does that make it dud.
Final Grade: B-
