The second half of the issue centers on the mutant-messiah Hope Summers, in a tale written by Jason Aaron. It seems Hope has been doing some soul searching and is looking to make a name for herself in the superhero community. Cyclops is doing his best to keep her rained in.
However, Hope is less than satisfied with staying confined to the mutant island, “Utopia.” Hope takes off and has a run in with the Serpent Society before Cyke and Emma Frost can catch up with her, and not a moment too soon either. We also get a first glimpse of the Phoenix force on a trajectory to earth, no doubt.
These two stories are OK. They are meant to give readers some background on both characters so that once all the fighting begins, readers won't be totally in the dark as to who Hope is or Wanda’s current status with the Avengers. The writers succeed in giving us some background before issue #1 hits the shops, but nothing monumental happens.
I have to say, the thing I enjoyed most about this issue was the art by Frank Cho. I became a fan of Cho’s work when he worked on the “Mighty Avengers,” and let me tell you, he's still got it. Cho is one of the few artists working in the biz today who's character renderings capture a classic quality -- and yet each stroke of his brush feels fresh.
All in all, Avengers vs. X-Men #0 is a good starting point if you are a new reader... or if you're out of touch with what’s been happening in the pages of Avengers and X-Men. If you have been keeping up with those titles, then Avengers vs. X-Men #0 isn't really mandatory reading.
