An early trailer raised some concerns about the film’s visual effects. I can assure you there is nothing to worry about. I’d even dare to say that ASM2 has some of the best Spider-Man action sequences to date. Spidey’s showdown with Electro literally lights up the screen, vibrant and thrilling. The action is easy to follow and never gets lost in quick-cuts or chaotic editing. I assure you -- you will believe a man can swing.
The tone of this film is appropriately lighter than the previous one. Spider-Man is not some dark, brooding personality (that’s the other guy). I know a lot of folks love dark-heroes, but that’s just not Spider-Man’s bag. I think Webb succeeded in making a film that is suitable for a PG-13 audience, without dumbing things down to the point that older viewers won’t be counting the minutes till they can head for the exit.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is entertaining and mostly works. Unfortunately, the cartoonish villains keep the movie from ever achieving anything truly “amazing”. While it does have impressive visuals and action, the performances and emotional substance are what saves the day.
Three and 1/2 stars out of five for the Amazing Spider-Man 2.
