Issue #11 continued...
Brian Michael Bendis seems to take a more of a minimalist approach writing this issue. This ends up having its share of pros and cons. By allowing the story to be told more visually, it created a stronger sense of drama than having the battle scenes overflowing with dialogue.
On the down side it makes for a very quick read. Artist Olivier Coipel returns to handle the penciling privileges and as always his work dose not disappoint. Coipel is quickly taking his place among the ranks of comic artist who are capable of delivering solid work, regardless of how massive the storyline.
In many ways this issue is quite good. As I mentioned the art is outstanding and really carries the book. The death in the story also raises the stakes significantly. However, as a long time comic fan I closed the book feeling a little jaded. I don’t know about you, but I find death in comics to be a very fickle thing. Particularly in the case of characters that have seemingly met their demise previously. The impact of this death will rely heavily upon how the story ends and how the characters deal with this loss in their own monthly titles.
The other thing that bothered me was that here we are in the home stretch and the most cliché thing you can do with a story of superhero vs. superhero takes place, they join forces. But I digress; what else should one really expect form a tale that forces two of comic books most popular teams into a battle royale.
Final Rating: B
