10. WIZKIDS / WOTC LEGAL SPAT
In 2007, Wizkids sued Wizards of the Coast and asked for a summary judgement to declare that their Pirates game did not infringe on WOTC's patents. It was actually a pre-emptive lawsuit on Wizkids's part because in 2004 WOTC filed for a patent for "Constructable Strategy Games" -- in which you build models out of punch-out cards sold in booster packs.

You heard me right -- WOTC appears to have a patent on punching out cards to build models out of them (another reason the patent system is horribly broken).
Just to be clear, WOTC announced the patent first, then Wizkids sued to get a summary judgement (a common legal tactic; if Wizkids wins the summary judgement, it will prevent WOTC from suing in the future).
An out-of-court settlement was reached in Summer of 2008:
“Wizards has granted WizKids a license for the Pirates PocketModel Game to United States Patent No. 7,201,374, and all related patents that might issue.” "
